Strolling Through Gardens and University Campuses
Caracas is a city where strolling becomes an extraordinary experience; here, we can choose any route, from urban walks to trails completely surrounded by nature. This is a very diverse city; perhaps it’s true that it’s built on the fly, without much planning, but this is a reality that plagues most modern cities—especially in Latin America, where spontaneity has carved out a path through urban spaces, creating unique environments and incredible places.

Caracas es una ciudad en donde pasear se convierte en una actividad extraordinaria; acá podemos elegir cualquier ruta, desde caminatas urbanas hasta recorridos totalmente dominados por entornos naturales. Esta es una ciudad muy diversa; quizás es cierto que es construida sobre la marcha, sin mucha planificación, pero esto es una realidad que acecha a la mayoría de las ciudades modernas y más cuando hablamos del entorno latinoamericano, en donde la espontaneidad se ha abierto camino a través de los espacios urbanos, generando entornos únicos y lugares increíbles.

Personally, I’m a lover of cities, especially this one, where I was born, grew up, and proudly live. For me, there’s no chance of getting bored in Caracas, since there’s always an interesting plan to pursue—one where we’ll find adventure, diversity, and many contrasts that, over the years, have become the invisible hallmark of this capital.
En lo particular, soy amante de las ciudades, en especial de esta, en donde nací, crecí y vivo orgullosamente. Para mí, en Caracas no hay oportunidad para aburrirse, puesto que siempre existirá un plan interesante que abordar, en donde encontraremos aventuras, diversidad y muchos contrastes que con el pasar de los años se han convertido en la marca invisible de esta capital.
Whenever I want to take a stroll to clear my mind, take photos, and simply enjoy life, I choose my destination based on what my heart tells me; if I want peace, I choose a park; if I want activity, I choose a boulevard; but if I want a little of both and, at the same time, to reminisce about the past, there’s no better place than to walk once again through the spaces that make up the campus of the Central University of Venezuela.
Cada vez que quiero pasear para distraer la mente, tomar fotografías y sencillamente disfrutar de la vida, mi destino es elegido desde las notas que pronuncia mi corazón; si quiero paz, elijo un parque; si quiero movimiento, elijo un bulevar, pero si quiero un poco de ambos y al mismo tiempo recordar viejas épocas, no existe mejor sitio que caminar nuevamente por los espacios que conforman el campus de la Universidad Central de Venezuela.
It might sound strange to many to take a stroll through a university campus, but in this case, we’re practically talking about a park and an open-air museum, where everything blends together perfectly, where the gardens have gradually been restored, the buildings are regaining their original luster, and each tree stands before us with understated elegance, offering us an abstract and 100% natural touch.
A lo mejor a muchos les puede sonar extraño el hecho de pasear por un campus universitario, pero es que en este caso estamos hablando prácticamente de un parque y un museo a cielo abierto, en donde todo combina a la perfección, en donde poco a poco los jardines se han venido recuperando, los edificios retoman su brillo original y cada árbol se presenta de manera sobria ante nosotros, regalándonos un toque abstracto y 100% natural.
The college students who spend their days in these spaces are used to the constant presence of outsiders within this academic enclave, but best of all, here we find diversity, zero prejudice, and a truly welcoming environment—a place where it’s pleasant to be, where age differences don’t matter, and where everyone offers a smile, plenty of optimism, and positive energy.
El estudiante universitario que hace vida en estos espacios está acostumbrado a la visita permanente de foráneos dentro de este enclave académico, pero lo mejor de todo es que acá encontramos diversidad, cero prejuicios y un entorno realmente humano, en donde es agradable estar, donde las diferencias de edades no importan, en donde todos muestran una sonrisa, mucho optimismo y buenas energías.
It was quite sunny, and I must admit the heat was also taking its toll, but fortunately, many of the walkways here are covered, and thanks to the leafy trees, the natural shade seems endless. This is how you can walk peacefully regardless of the weather; moreover, this is an area where there’s a constant breeze, which allows us to cool off at no cost.
Estaba haciendo bastante sol y debo admitir que el calor también hacía de las suyas, pero afortunadamente, en muchos de los pasillos que circundan acá, la dificultad se encuentra en techados y, gracias a los frondosos árboles, las sombras naturales parecen infinitas. Es así como se puede caminar con tranquilidad sin importar las circunstancias climáticas; además, esta es una zona en donde la brisa es constante, lo cual permite refrescarnos sin precio alguno.
Once you start walking, time seems to stand still, while your gaze wanders, taking in every detail, every shape and color that brings to life a setting where magic is real. To be here is to admire human ingenuity at its finest; here, everything seems so meticulously planned that it’s perhaps no exaggeration to say it’s a perfectly designed space, where both locals and visitors feel delighted and safe.
Una vez que uno empieza a caminar, el reloj parece alterarse, mientras que la mirada se pierde observando cada detalle, cada forma y color que le dan vida a un conjunto en donde la magia es real. Estar aquí es admirar al ingenio humano en su máxima expresión; aquí todo parece estar tan calculado que quizás no sea exagerado decir que es un espacio diseñado a la perfección, en donde propios y visitantes nos sentimos complacidos y seguros.
Sometimes, when you encounter iconic spaces, they tend to be monumental in nature; therefore, feeling overwhelmed by such grandeur is the most common reaction. But here, despite the sheer scale of the space, the individual experience is the exact opposite of what one might expect. Incredibly, there is a sense of intimacy here, there is peace, and, consequently, a feeling of deep well-being.
A veces, cuando uno se enfrenta a espacios icónicos, estos suelen ser de carácter monumental; por lo tanto, sentirse abrumado por tanta grandeza es el sentimiento más común, pero acá, a pesar de las magnitudes del espacio, el sentir individual es todo lo contrario a lo que se pudiera pensar. Increíblemente, aquí hay cercanía, hay paz y, por lo tanto, un sentimiento de profundo bienestar.
Walking here is like being in control of your own steps; for me personally, it means enjoying every meter I walk, since there’s no monotony, no boredom, and it’s a place that I believe is designed to keep the mind alert, always on the lookout for something new—and that’s exactly what has captivated me from the very first moment I set foot on this campus.
Caminar por acá es sentirse dueño de sus propios pasos; en lo personal, significa disfrutar de cada metro recorrido, ya que no hay monotonía, no existe el aburrimiento y es un lugar que creo está pensado para mantener a la mente despierta, siempre a la expectativa de encontrarse con algo nuevo, y es justamente eso lo que me ha enganchado desde el primer momento que pisé este campus.
Today’s walk was heartwarming; it reminded me that this will always be my alma mater, because even though I’m just another visitor today, in my heart I’ll always be that student who had so many experiences within these hallways and in those gardens. I return home with a joyful heart and a renewed spirit; I hope the restoration process continues for each of the places that make up this University City, so that on my future visits I can continue to delight in that incredible feeling where grandeur and perfection take center stage.
El paseo de hoy fue reconfortante; me enseñó que esta seguirá siendo mi casa de estudios, ya que, por más que hoy sea un visitante más, en el corazón siempre seré ese estudiante que vivió tantas experiencias dentro de estos pasillos y sobre esos jardines. Regreso a casa con el corazón contento y el espíritu renovado; ojalá que siga adelante el proceso de recuperación de cada uno de los lugares que conforman esta Ciudad Universitaria, para que en mis próximas visitas pueda seguirme deleitando con esa sensación tan increíble en donde la grandeza y la perfección son los protagonistas.
