Saludos.

Greetings. The friend @damarysvibra in her column for the
@holos-lotus community leaves us this invitation to examine our way of communicating. I tell you...
Poor communication must be the main cause of the problems we have with others. Any misunderstanding can be enough for a relationship to go wrong, fracture and even disappear. That is why it is important to pay attention to the way we communicate.
When I was young, I didn't give due importance to this issue, I wasn't very aware of its impact. So I didn't pay much attention to making sure whether what I said was fully understood or not. It was logical that with that attitude, many misunderstandings arose, which mainly affected the people closest to me.
The fact is that communicating properly is not necessarily a matter of course. Communication, like many other things, is something we learn in our upbringing and throughout our lives. That's why the subject never goes out of style and continues to be emphasized.
If we grew up in a home where people communicated poorly, it is likely that we will not learn to communicate either, but it is something we can improve with willingness and desire to do so.
There are basic issues for effective communication. Perhaps the most important is listening to our interlocutors.
And here it is important to make a distinction between hearing and listening, to hear we do not need to do anything, we do not activate our will, the sounds come freely to our ears.
But listening is something else, here we show an intentionality, a will to do; we listen when we are ready to pay attention to the other person. And paying attention to him/her means, among other things, to keep our eyes on him/her and let him/her express his/her thoughts without interrupting him/her.
To listen properly we must exercise patience, it is not something that can be done in a hurry, it takes time. It also requires concentration. We cannot listen if we have our mind on something else, if we have an urgency to finish the conversation.
In our time, there are two things that are detrimental to good communication: haste and lack of attention.
The speed of today's life and the habit of doing many things simultaneously make it difficult for our mind to achieve concentration. An issue that hinders any attempt at communication.
I am one of those people who have a restless mind, something I am very aware of and try to keep under control. I am not going to tell you that it is easy to quiet the mind. But if we are aware of it, we can act. In my case I try to quiet my thoughts by doing meditation exercises and breathing deeply and slowly several times throughout the day.
However, sometimes when I am talking to someone I catch myself with my mind on something else, it may be a task I have pending, or something that worries me, the case is that for fractions of a second I get distracted. As a consequence of this distraction I may not understand very well what they are telling me. In those moments I try to bring the conversation back to the point I missed. I prefer to pass for redundant than to be left with the feeling that I did not understand what I was told.
Some people resent being asked to expand on what they have said. It is mistakenly believed that everyone should be able to understand what we say. But this is not always the case, there are no telepathic connections for the other person to enter our thoughts and see what we see.
Sometimes in a conversation there is a lack of information to better understand an idea, or perhaps the other person did not use the most appropriate word. All this creates confusion and hinders communication. What do we do then...? Isn't it better to ask for the necessary explanations until we have really understood each other...?
For our communication to be efficient and fulfill its role of contributing to understanding, it must be sincere, transparent and leave no doubts in the interpretation. It is preferable to ask for explanations and ask the other person if everything is clear than to continue conversations where neither party knows for sure what we are talking about...
Thank you for your time.
