Every business means a new challenge and there are people who enjoy facing them.

This is the case of Javier. His business ventures began when he was a university student. At that time he realized that there was a sector of his city where newspaper distribution did not reach. He talked to the people at the newsstands, contacted one of the newspapers with the largest national circulation and soon he had set up a delivery route.

With the money from the route he raised enough to buy a passenger van. He worked with two drivers whom he paid on a percentage basis. Soon after, he had enough capital to start venturing into other businesses that caught his attention.

His next business was a sporting goods and clothing store. There he even became a direct importer of the products in the industry. For a while this business was very profitable, it allowed Javier to buy his own apartment, a motorcycle and a late model truck. But changes imposed by the State in the tariff policies forced him to abandon the import business. The business could not continue.

However, Javier was not deterred. The new opportunity presented itself at the beginning of the great exodus of Venezuelans abroad. Many of those who left were auctioning off their homes. The housing market for sale was saturated and real estate prices plummeted.

Javier heard that a large house with a lot of land was for sale in a housing development near the city. When he saw it, his inquiring mind and his commercial vision told him that he could develop several projects there. At that moment he was not sure what they would be, but he knew he would come up with something.

The savings he had were not enough to buy the house, so he had to make a risky decision, selling the motorcycle and the truck. With that he completed the money and had something left to start his first project.

The first thing Javier noticed was that in the area where the house was, there was no deli or spices for sale. He prepared a part of the garage of the house and opened a mini-market. Step by step he expanded it and added other types of items. The business was profitable and made enough profit for the investment.

Javier also realized that there were no gyms in the area, so he decided to open one. He began to develop a second floor in the living area and within three years he had finished the work. Since its inauguration, the gym has become a success.

Years went by and some changes in our friend's life imposed other priorities different from business. He got married, two children were born, and he needed to buy a larger apartment. In addition, two vehicles for him and his wife. The money from the two businesses he owned gave him enough for all of them to live comfortably.

But the temptation to invent something new is always present in entrepreneurs like him.

Before the end of the year Javier called me to tell me about his new project. It was something he had had in mind since he was studying at the University, but he had not found the time to carry it out.

In the lower part of the house he had decided to set up a café where people can read, listen to some music and play board games. He estimates that this project will probably be ready by the middle of 2025.

In the conversation he told me that it was very likely that this new business would not give the same profitability as the mini-market or the gym, but he does it to satisfy a kind of personal whim, he always wanted to have a business like that. As long as it does not generate losses, it is enough for him.

Sense of opportunity, betting with calculated risk, and expanding the vision according to the circumstances, make the difference in entrepreneurs like Javier.

Thanks for your time.
