An unforgettable day and flavor / Un día y un sabor inolvidable (eng-esp)
Hello, coffee lovers who accompany us every morning.
The most memorable moment I have in a coffee shop, and which I bring to you for the TCSP of week 134, is without a doubt when I started liking coffee.
I'm Cuban, so coffee was always drunk at home, but I didn't like it. Or at least, that's what I said, since, in my childhood ignorance, I believed it was "an old-people custom."
However, as I entered adolescence, things began to change. I could already smell freshly brewed coffee and I liked it. It was exquisite. But I couldn't give in.
It wasn't until I started college that one day, a boy I liked asked me out. We sat down in a nearby cafe to chat.
It wasn't a great coffee shop, but it was nice, and besides, I wasn't there for the coffee.
My date ordered an espresso and asked me what I wanted. Looking at the list, I didn't know what to say, and I didn't want to seem ungrateful by telling him I didn't like coffee. But he seemed to see something in my face and asked me to let him recommend something, so I let him.
A little while later, I found myself with a foamy mug topped with cinnamon. It smelled like a house in the morning, like home. I added two teaspoons of sugar and tasted it. It was a small sip, as I was still in disbelief. But then came another, and another, and another until I finished the mug in no time: I loved it.
Cappuccino was my entry into the world of coffee. Later, he gave me a café bombón, and on another date, I tried it with condensed milk and vanilla.
Today, I don't know where in the world he is, but wherever I have my morning coffee, I have him to thank. My family never asked me when or how I started drinking coffee. They just smiled, and ever since then, there's been a cup ready for me.
