Improper waste disposal is one of the challenges the world is facing and I call confidently say that our nonchalant attitude towards waste disposal is causing a lot of issues for us globally.
Some time ago, I was watching a documentary where a big fish was rescued. It could hardly move so they checked and discovered that it had ingested lots of plastics. It was slowly killing the fish and I wonder how many more fishes are under that condition in the ocean.
Do we know how many animals are at the brink of extinction just because of how we handle our plastic waste poorly?
Fishes are not the only victims of improper disposal of our plastic waste, the terrestrial animals pay for these mistakes as well. I do collect fat and other consumable waste from cows for fish feed, and this has made me see a lot of things from visiting the abattoir.
Several times, cows that are allowed to graze openly have died unexpectedly without showing any sign of illness. Many of their death is a result of consuming plastic waste.
Without argument, humans are responsible for plastic and the improper disposal of it after use, we have brought damage not just to the ecosystem but to ourselves as well.
With my little time on earth, I have learned something about humans and I will love to talk about that first.
A lot of humans do not understand the negative impact of them disposing of their plastic waste in the wrong way and even when you tell many people it is wrong, they think it does harm animals and not them.
I have learned that humans do not take corrections seriously except the thing they are being cautioned about becomes a threat to them. If the majority of humans in the world understand the danger they are bringing on themselves, they will take all kinds of waste disposal properly.
About a year ago, I was in a part of Lagos called Bariga. It was during the rainy season and I could barely walk through the street in that area. Their houses were filled with water and I wish that I could gather everyone to let them know that they are bearing the consequences of not properly disposing of their plastic waste but it was impossible.
The residents of that area blame the government for poor infrastructure whereas they aren't doing anything to maintain the available ones. They aren't responsible for all the plastic waste in their drainage but have made the largest deposit of plastic waste in their drainages.
Many people might feel like it's impossible for us as humans to ingest plastic waste like animals so we shouldn't be bothered.
Have you thought about how we have caused a flood to happen in different parts of our communities, have you considered the life and properties that were damaged?
Oh, you feel like it is affecting some set of people but not you, that's true and it will definitely get you when we have successfully destroyed the ecosystem with our nonchalant attitude toward plastic waste disposal.
The use of plastics seems impossible in the world and I think the human race can't do without them. Since we have placed so much importance on plastic, we can use and dispose them properly to keep enjoying its use without harming ourselves, animals, and the ecosystem in general.
Let's get this straight, the reason why plastic is a problem is that, it doesn't decompose.
Since plastics don't decompose, managing them is the only way to properly disposing them but how;
A lot can be created from our plastic waste and the first step to that is organizing our waste properly. To make recycling easy, we must always separate our plastic from other waste. Doing that can make recycling very easy since there won't be a mixup.
Recycling can be in two forms and they are using the plastic waste by ourselves or transforming it into something else at the industrial level.
These plastics can be reused by us as a storage containers and other things. A lot of people do not see reusing plastic as necessary when they can get another one very easily, after all, they are very cheap.
I think the best way to make reusing effective is by making plastic containers and bags very expensive but I doubt that is possible since the production and sales of plastic can't be tracked in lots of countries.
Reusing can help us save money and we are also going to have an environment free from plastic waste.
The other form of recycling is done by industries that reproduce products from our plastic waste. Our plastic waste can be exchanged for cash with industries that make bags, straws, and mats from them. A lot of people are making a fortune from selling plastic waste and the industry is doing pretty well.
Imagine making money from waste, that would be cool right?
Recycling plastics would reduce the pressure on earth to give us more materials for plastic production.
Human is digging too much into nature in search of raw material to use for the production of things like plastics and our actions are telling on the ecosystem already.
Recycling can reduce the pressure on the ecosystem and it is a win-win situation for us and nature. We keep recycling and that helps us save the money that will be used for digging, extracting and processing.
We can make a lot of difference by properly disposing our plastic waste and like I said earlier, it is a win-win situation for human and nature.
