Hello to everyone in the Hive/PeakD art community! Today I want to share the step-by-step process of my latest digital illustration: a traveling crow resting in the Japanese countryside, wearing a traditional straw hat and oriental attire.
nitial Sketch & Pose Composition
The first step was defining the character's anthropomorphic anatomy. I opted for a slightly low perspective to add dynamism to the reclining pose, first mapping out the crow's structure, its talons, and the loose flow of its hakama pants and kasa hat.
Background & Flat Colors
Once the main figure was established, I added classic Japanese landscape elements to build the atmosphere: Mount Fuji in the background, a torii gate on the left, and cherry blossom (sakura) branches above. During this phase, I applied base flat colors without shading to ensure the color palette worked harmoniously.
Volume Modeling without Lineart
In this stage, I dropped the clean lineart to work through color blocks with soft gradients. I began building volume on the red pants, the straw hat, and the dark plumage, making sure to establish a clear contrast between the foreground and the surrounding vegetation.
Lighting & Shadow Rendering
I introduced a warm light source coming from the upper-left side. This directional light creates sharp shadows across the clothing and beneath the hat, bringing focus to the character's intent gaze. I also added depth to the scenery with layers of low-lying mist around the base of Mount Fuji.
Final Polish, Details & Signature
To wrap up the piece, I softened the background edges to keep the focus firmly on the character, adjusted the overall color saturation, added final highlights to the sky, and placed my signature (FERJART) in the bottom-right corner.
What do you think of the final result and the lineless rendering style? Let me know in the comments, and thank you for supporting my creative work!
