Today, I want to share with you the step-by-step process of my latest digital illustration titled "Red Fox". In this piece, I wanted to explore facial expression, vibrant color contrasts, and a symbolic composition that enfolds the main character.

Everything starts with loose, gestural lines. At this stage, I don't worry about clean line art; my focus is on finding the right pose and strong visual presence. I wanted a crouched yet defiant figure holding a firm, intense gaze. The fox mask sitting on top and the framing that mimics open jaws give the piece a strong narrative and protective vibe right from the start.
Once the sketch is set, I move on to laying down flat color shapes to define the main silhouettes. Here, I establish the core palette: warm skin tones, deep purple/dark hair, and a bold red for the mask. Defining the color scheme early on helps me understand how the color masses will interact with each other.
With the color structure ready, I begin rendering the skin and facial features. I use smooth gradients alongside soft purple and reddish shadows to build physical depth, emphasizing the character’s focused expression. The golden eyes start taking center stage, just as intended from the initial sketch.
In this phase, I focus on the surrounding elements. The framing jaws receive a smooth purple-to-magenta gradient to give them a stylized, imposing feel. I also refine the fox mask by adding the bright yellow eyes and sharpening the edges of the headpiece.
For the final version, I decided to swap the neutral background for a vibrant cyan/teal tone. This complementary contrast instantly pops the warm skin tones and the red mask. I added subtle rim lighting along the edges to integrate the character seamlessly into the environment before placing my artist signature.
