There are days when you just need to step away from the noise and paint a moment of pure calm. With this piece, I wanted to explore the contrast between the rigidity of aging technology and the organic freedom of nature: a weathered, rusty little automaton, far removed from any industrial landscape, simply enjoying a walk in the open air.
To set the stage, I chose a low-angle perspective to give the character’s stride a more dynamic presence against the vastness of the sky. The workflow moved from a loose, gestual sketch capturing the energy of the movement into broad color blocking. The palette deliberately pits the warm, earthy tones of the rust and soil against the saturated coolness of the atmospheric blues.
One of the most engaging challenges was treating the lighting and surface textures. I wanted the harsh sunlight to catch the rim lights on the metallic torso and jointed limbs, while keeping the water at the bottom rendered with quick, loose brushstrokes to capture the broken reflections on the lagoon's surface. The distant flocks of birds and the rough grass along the bank help anchor the character firmly into the environment.
I really enjoyed crafting this quiet narrative of an old machine finding its own rhythm on a clear day.
How does the balance between the water reflections and the sky lighting feel to you? I’d love to hear your thoughts and feedback in the comments!
