Now that summer is coming to an end here in Korea I was sure to go out and get some Samgyetang before it was too late. Samgyetang is a traditional Korean dish that is popular in the summer time. Traditionally eaten on some of the hottest days of the year to help beat the heat. Although it is served at boiling temperatures it is seen as refreshing in the summer months.
Samgyetang is quite a healthy dish. Sam, which stands for Insam(ginseng) gye(chicken) and tang(soup). The chicken is usually stuffed with rice, garlic, ginseng and dates. So, if you’re in Korea or Korea town and looking to beat the heat like the locals do, try a little Samgyetang; a dish that’s so hot it will make you forget about the weather for a bit.
If you’re lucky and find the right spot, they’ll be serving Insam-Ju (ginseng liquor). Insam-Ju has been said to have the following health benefits with the ability to:
-Increase blood circulation
-Strengthen the immune system
-Alleviate stress
-Restore vitality
An acquired taste to some, but to me...a taste of tradition and culture.
Don’t worry though, if you’ve already missed the hottest days of the year, you can still enjoy this meal any time. Personally, it’s my go to meal when I’m feeling a bit under the weather due to its healthy ingredients and energy boosting ability.
Have a bite, take a sip and enjoy your life!
