The old board had seen the beginnings of thousands of meals. Scars from sharp knives decorated the surface of the wood, remnants of cuts no longer remembered.
I peeled cloves of garlic and set them down to be diced. Their scent filled the air as their sticky residue clung to the board. Once they had been finely chopped, I moved them aside to make room for the onion.
I sliced off its head and pulled its brown skin away. My nose twitched, but my eyes didn’t water at all as I cut the bulb first in half and then into smaller pieces. These I added to the garlic in an aromatic blend.
The tomato’s juices ran freely when the fruit was pierced by my blade, settling in riverbeds long carved into the board. I let the pieces rest where they sat as I heated oil in a pan to saute the garlic and onion.
Their time to cook would be soon.
