I watched him pacing back and forth, prancing around, once I looked down on him, he seemed so ridiculous and somewhat annoying, but he was just trying to brighten up my day, which was full of stress and a lot of bitterness.
With a face full of make-up and a smile on his face, with jumps and pirouettes, he was supposedly doing magic, which seemed silly to me, but even my bad mood didn't stop him, he continued, trying his best to get a smile out of me.
The metro was taking longer than usual that day or maybe it was my desire to leave and stop seeing that silly clown, which made the time go slower. Suddenly, he came up to me and put his hand behind my ear, I swear I felt like punching him, how dare this clown! And then he showed me a flower.
I was paralysed, the flower he pulled out behind my ear was a daisy, one like the one he used to give my mother every time she came home from school and as it grew, every time she came home from school, I felt like hitting him.
from school and when she grew up, every time I went to her house to visit her. My mother had passed away a month ago and I hadn't seen a daisy since then and so when I received it, the clown managed to bring a smile to my face.
The metro finally arrived, what a surprise! The clown also got on and began to try to get a smile out of others, I was watching him from afar, carefully and it was then that I could realise, it was then that I could understand. He wasn't smiling, it was just a smile on his face.
He spent hours trying to make others laugh, he didn't care about the bad faces, bad gestures and even insults he received, he never gave up and he wouldn't leave you alone until he saw you smile, but nobody could erase the smile drawn on his face and it caused him a real one, because nobody noticed it.
My station was over and I couldn't get off, as I was still watching the clown closely. A little girl pressed her nose hard and an old man looked at him just as I did at the beginning, with contempt. With balloons he created figures for everyone present and he kept moving his colourful wig from one side to the other.
He arrived at his stop, getting off at that station and I got off there too, I felt like a clown stalker, but I just wanted to see what he would do. He walked into a lonely alley, took off his silly wig and squeaky nose, wiped the make-up off his face and that's when I really noticed someone sad.
He spent the whole day making everyone laugh, he didn't stop clowning around until he reached his goal, but at the end of the day no one made him happy. His smile was only a painted smile and in his deep eyes there was an emptiness. I felt cheated by that clown, I thought he just wanted to share some of his happiness with me.
I approached him and he was surprised to see me, I think he was scared. I asked him why he was no longer smiling and he told me that his mission was to make others happy, but the fact that he was always seen smiling didn't mean that he wasn't broken inside.
I walked home, night was approaching and I took a great lesson with me, which I reflected on along the way. Many times we are that clown, we make others laugh non-stop, even when inside we are crying.
Every time I see a clown in the squares or on the underground, I am grateful for his games, his laughter, but I don't only receive from what he tries to give me, what is so hard to give him, because he doesn't have it. I also try to give him a token of happiness, the kind I never received when I was also the clown.
