Yesterday must have been one of those "Great minds think alike!" days. Earlier in the morning, @steevc pinged me in the comments of a post by
@slobberchops which included some bunting flags on one of his escapades inside a derelict building. Steve mentioned that I had a flag pole in my garden, and in reply, I added one of my flags to the comments section. Meanwhile, over in the Ecency Discord channel
@beeber mentioned a flag, and I was all over it like a rash.
At the time, we had a slight problem with foxes coming into the garden, so I used that as an excuse to introduce a 25-foot pole and a bit of cloth with the wife. "Honestly, the flag flapping around will scare them off the fence panels."
Foxes are made of sterner stuff. I even caught one sitting on top of the fence, watching my flag flapping around like it was watching a TV! It was that engrossed I got so close I could have pushed the stupid thing off! I bought our pole along with a selection of flags; insanely expensive, but there you go.
This is the Essex flag. I bought it because I was born in Essex; it consists of three notched Saxon seaxes or cutlasses. I fly it for the week of my birthday. I then have the Staffordshire flag, which is for my wife
I bought the Olympic flag to fly, well, during the Olympics. LOL
And finally, the flag of the town where I live.
Flags have been around since time began. The moment Ugg the Troglodyte worked out, he could carry it around the caves if he drew a picture with a bit of charcoal on animal skin and poked a stick through it. Everyone would follow him, plus it made it easier to work out which other Troggs to bash over the head because they were shuffling along behind their own animal skin.
As time went on, things got a bit more sophisticated, apart from the bashing over the head, that is. Folk still rallied around flags, but they started to wear the emblems of the flags on their clothing. This made it easier to see who to bash or, for the more enterprising, who to chuck in the back of a cart to raise a nice ransom. And you thought terrorists invented kidnapping and ransoming.
I'm always kind of jealous of Americans regarding flags. I wish we could have streets bedecked with our flag outside our homes like they do.
Sadly, the English flag and the Flag of the Union (Union Jack) have been appropriated over the years by far-right groups, so many people worry that if they have either of the flags, their homes will be labelled as racist or far worse.
Having said that, over the years, with sporting successes, the England flag seems to be undergoing rehabilitation.
I was lucky enough to be in Belgium on the day Britain left the European Union. Along with others, I made my way to the European Parliament Rue Wiertz 60/B, 1047 Bruxelles, Belgium, to take a selfie under the United Kingdom's flag while it few for the very last time. This picture was apparently taken at 17:17 Belgium time, six hours and forty-three minutes before we officially left the EU. It's a bit fuzzy because I had to be quick as many people lined up to take their photos under the flag. Some, I suppose, saddened others jubilant but what most of them forgot was we were still all represented by that one flag.
EDIT: The Staffordshuire flag image does not belong to me image source I did put the source under the image in the HTML but is not showing up for some reason?
