Hello, friends especially foodies!

Still you remember about my yesterday’s article? If the answer is yes, you must know that near the legendary noodle restaurant, there were some street food seller stalls. We went to one of the legendary there.. But before I continue telling you our experience. I would like to ask for your guess, what street snacks we bought for our takeaway that time. A bit clues about it..

The snacks were fried.

It had long bodies.

It tasted savory.

The snacks were actually an inculturation of Chinese culture.

I am sure you already know the answer?!?

Yes it actually was fried dough stick which popular here in my country as cakwe.

A bit about Cakwe

Cakwe actually is a traditional Chinese snacks with the original name You Tiao, it came as the part of inculturation in my country and here in Indonesia, it is quite popular as snacks or could be eaten with porridge. Cakwe had a bit crunchy and chewy texture with savory flavour. It usually served with the chilli vinegar sauce.

The Food Stall

Now I would like to share about our experience, buying cakwe in one of the legendary food stall here

Like you could see, the stall was small and modest. There you could find 3 persons, the one, was the owner, Ko Atek (Ko is a calling for eldery Indonesian Chinese), his wife which helped her to receive the money when we paid and also a helper which help him to fry or any helping things.

The Legenda?!?

This food stall already built since 1971. You could find many articles about this legendary food stall. They said that the different between this cakwe with others were the seller, Ko Atek, always used the good quality of coconut oil to fry which would make the cakwe tasted good and still crunchy long time after had fried. But it was our first visit there, so we would like to prove it ourselves… You could see how I reviewed the taste of this cakwe also in this article.

The Seller and The Snacks

Here I took a picture of their large caldron and also Ko Atek with his cakwe (left bottom). Mom ordered it from him some of cakwe to take home.

Actually besides cakwe they also sold kue bantal (pillow cake), but both of us were not sweet tooth so we only bought their cakwe.

The Price

It was 6,000 IDR for a piece (small and only a piece of it) or around 0.42 USD. They had the same price for cakwe and kue bantal. How do you think about the price, is it expensive?

The Look and The Taste

Here how the cakwe looked like when we opened it at home

The size was small. It had crunchy chewy soft texture with savory flavour. It wasn’t hard to bite cause it was still soft in not warm condition. It also served with sour sweet spicy chilli sauce which was also tasty. Well I thought their cakwe was tasty but it wasn’t the best one we have ever tasted, cause some could sell delicious cakwe here in my country. But their cakwe didn’t make us cough which was great, although from the street they still used high quality of oil to fry.

Will you try our legendary snacks?

Thanks for reading my article, hope you enjoy it and stay tune for more CRAFT things from me!
