Tonight, I decided to have a simple dinner. Nothing fancy, nothing complicated, and nothing that would make me think too much. It was Friday night, and after a tiring day at work, my mind and body were already asking for one thing: comfort food.
There are days when I want to explore new dishes and try something exciting, but tonight was not that kind of night. Tonight, I just wanted something that would fill my tummy, make me feel better, and allow me to go home feeling satisfied. Sometimes, that kind of dinner is the best kind, right?
So I went to Upper Boon Keng Road and decided to dine at the food centre there. By the time I arrived, most of the stalls were already closed. It was a little quiet compared to the usual busy food centre vibe, but there were still a few stalls open. Since I didn’t want to overthink my dinner choice, I just walked around and picked the one that looked nice among the remaining options.
That was how I ended up ordering from this stall with a very catchy signage. It was simple but easy to remember because of the big number 50 on the signboard. They specialize in Nasi Lemak, Curry Chicken Mee, and a variety of other dishes. The display also looked inviting, especially with the fried items and side dishes ready to be picked.
I was interested in their version of Nasi Lemak, so I went for it.
The good thing about this stall is that aside from the usual rice and chicken, they also have several side dishes that you can add to your plate. And since I wanted my dinner to be simple but still satisfying, I added sautéed spinach, minced meat, and a fried egg. The total cost was SGD 5.10, which I think is really a good deal considering the variety on the plate.
When the food was served, it looked very homey and comforting. The rice, fried chicken wing, minced meat, fried egg, and green vegetables all came together like a complete meal. It wasn’t the kind of dish that tries too hard to impress, but it had everything I wanted at that moment.
My favorite part was definitely the fried chicken wing. It tasted freshly cooked, and that made a big difference. The outside was crunchy, while the inside still had moisture. I really like fried chicken when it has that nice crisp skin but still stays juicy inside. It was simple, but very enjoyable.
The sautéed spinach was also nice. It had good seasoning, and I liked that it still had a fresh bite to it. It tasted like it was blanched properly before being sautéed, so the texture was just right. The greens also helped balance the fried chicken and minced meat, making the whole plate feel more complete.
The minced meat was flavorful and went really well with the rice. It had that savory taste that made every spoonful more satisfying. And of course, the fried egg was a good addition too. A simple fried egg can really make a rice meal feel more comforting, especially when you mix it with the rice and other dishes.
To complete the meal, I also got myself a cold drink with pearls. It was creamy, sweet, and refreshing, which made the dinner feel even more like a small reward after a long day.
Overall, this was a simple dinner, but it was exactly what I needed. Affordable, filling, comforting, and satisfying. Sometimes, after a tiring day, that is more than enough.
