Juan hid his face in his hands, he felt sad, he had lost the money he had saved for Christmas shopping, it had been burned in the fire caused by the candle when it fell right on the night table while they were sleeping, his wife had forgotten to put it out after lighting it for light because due to the electricity rationing they were left without service for several hours. He did not want Jacinta to notice his anguish, he was sad because his children would not receive any gifts.
"It seems that this Christmas my children will not have a baby Jesus." said Juan to his wife.
"Calm down, Juan, the boys already have enough toys and don't worry about the clothes, my sister told me she was going to give them some pants and I have several meters of fabric, I can use that to make some shirts for Julio and Rafael, for María Luisa I have already made the dresses she is going to wear for the first time, as for you and me any clothes will do, so keep your spirits up, man."
"You don't understand, my children will not understand why Baby Jesus will not come this year."
"They will understand, you'll see." Asserted Jacinta.
The oldest son of the couple, Julio heard the whole conversation, as he was near his parents doing his homework, he thought, I have to talk to my brothers about what is going on.
María Luisa and Rafael were already in the bedroom when Julio arrived.
"Why have you brought us together, what is the mischief you want to involve us in?" Grumbled María Luisa.
"Don't worry Maria, it's nothing like that, it's just that I have a plan."
"Why do we need a plan, why do we need a plan, you have done something wrong, I know you."
"Maria, what a questioner, you have become, I have done nothing wrong, tell me if you want to hear it because if not I'll do it by myself and that's it."
"Okay, tell us what you want from us, but I have a feeling I'm going to regret listening to you."
"Oh María!, you are always so pessimistic, here I come." Julio said.
Maria Luisa and Rafael listened attentively to what their brother was telling them and what he wanted to do to make their father feel happy at Christmas.
"But how come we're going to dress up for Christmas, the kids will make fun of us when we're dressed like this," protested Rafael.
They won't laugh at us and if they do, who cares, come on brothers, say yes. Julio begged.
The siblings were silent for quite a while, until Maria said, "all right, I'll go with you, but I won't wear that ridiculous outfit you say, I'll find my own clothes."
The noise of the traqui-traqui and the tumbarranchos was deafening, and the smell of gunpowder invaded the atmosphere, it was already a good night Julio and his brothers met with several of their friends, and they played in the street, it was the only day that their parents allowed them, so they wanted to enjoy it to the maximum, shortly before ten o'clock the children stopped playing to return to their homes because it was time to sleep.
The children went to bed excited, feeling great emotion, for the adventure that awaited them the next day. The first to be ready were Julio and Rafael had put on their shepherd costumes, they had used them when they had to participate for the second time in the living nativity scene of the school, Maria Luisa refused to put on her angel costume, she would go out dressed as the Virgin Mary, besides she had always wanted to be the virgin, but they never chose her, now was her chance, and she did not care about having a baby.
They were going to give them to the children who collected cartons at the supermarket and who lived under a bridge near their house. Their mother sensed when they opened the door and immediately went over to find out where they were going with those heavy bags.
Julio replied to his mother, they are our old toys, and we are going to give them to the children who are in the street, we know that this year dad did not have money to buy ours, so we decided to do something so that he would not be so sad, besides my grandfather, Paco told me one day that people forgot the meaning of Christmas, they only thought about buying and possessing, they did not seek to give, that is why I thought it was a good idea to give them as a gift.
In the afternoon of that Christmas, the three siblings talked a lot about their experience, they were very excited, their faces were brimming with happiness when they remembered the surprise faces of the children, when they were offered the gifts at first they received them with fear, but then they were grateful and happy, while Juan and Jacinta were happy to see their children so satisfied, no doubt this was the happiest Christmas they had lived up to that moment.
