Some of the Best Decisions I Ever Made Looked Like Mistakes at the Time
I quit a stable job once with no real backup plan. People around me thought i had lost my mind. My own family was visibly worried. On paper it looked reckless, and honestly in the moment it felt reckless too.
That decision ended up changing the direction of my life in ways i could never have predicted while making it. But i did not know any of that at the time. While it was happening it just felt terrifying and uncertain and like exactly the kind of mistake everyone around me believed it was.
I think about that whenever i am tempted to judge a decision purely by how it looks in the present moment. Some of the wisest choices people make do not look wise at all when they are making them. They look risky. Unstable. Confusing to anyone watching from the outside. And some of the worst choices look perfectly safe and reasonable right up until they quietly collapse years later.
You cannot always judge a decision by how it appears right now. Some choices need time to reveal whether they were wisdom or recklessness, and sometimes you only find out which one it was several years down the road, looking back with information you simply did not have yet.
This is not permission to be careless. Some risks really are just risks without anything redeeming hiding underneath them. But it is a reminder that discomfort alone does not automatically mean a decision is wrong. Sometimes discomfort is just the cost of doing something that actually matters.
I have also made decisions that looked completely fine at the time and turned out to be the wrong ones. Stayed somewhere too long out of fear disguised as loyalty. Played it safe when i should have moved. Those mistakes were quieter and took much longer to reveal themselves.
So now i try judging decisions less by how they look immediately and more by whether they came from fear or from something more honest underneath. It is not a perfect system. Nothing really is.
But it has served me far better than waiting around for a certainty that was never going to arrive anyway.
