Started Asking Better Questions and My Life Started Giving Better Answers
For years the questions i asked myself operated in a specific register. Am i doing enough. What is wrong here. Why is this not working. What am i missing. They came with a built in assumption that something was deficient and my job was to identify and correct it.
The answers those questions produced tended to match. Lists of what was lacking. Evidence for the premise that something needed fixing. A general orientation toward what was absent rather than what was present.
I started noticing the pattern after a particularly long stretch of those same questions producing the same kind of unsatisfying answers. And got curious about whether the questions themselves were the problem rather than just the answers.
What happens if i ask what is actually working right now. What is available to me that i have not fully used yet. What would this look like if it were simpler than i am making it. What is the most honest version of what i actually want here.
The texture of what came back was different. Not relentlessly positive, some of it was still difficult. But more specific. More grounded in reality rather than in anxiety about reality. More likely to point toward something actionable.
The questions you ask create the frame through which you look at your own situation. A deficit frame produces deficit answers because you are looking for deficits and you will find evidence for whatever you are looking for. That is just how attention works.
This is not about forcing positivity. It is about noticing when the framing of the question is doing more harm than help and choosing a different frame deliberately.
Better questions do not guarantee better outcomes. But they tend to produce better starting points for working toward them.
