Yesterday in the US it was thanksgiving. It's the end of the harvest season and we're thankful for another year of bounty. So we celebrate with a feast. Turkey is the traditional centerpiece of the meal (people even call it turkey-day) but mashed potatoes and gravy are every bit as iconic. We replace the turkey with a vegan roast as an alternative, but often have a pretty traditional meal otherwise. Here's what we made:
From the top, clockwise: green-beans pan-seared, and steamed in shoyu, with "bacon" bits and black sesame seeds; a slice of "roast" (which was really good -- we'd never had this exact product before but it was fantastic); cranberry conserve -- this was frozen from a previous year, but was good as new, it's made following the recipe from Joy of Cooking; chunky mashed potatoes from purple Peruvians with skin-on next to creamy whipped white potatoes, both topped with mushroom gravy.
Dinner was served with water, a nice Ch芒teauneuf-du-Pape, and some craft IPAs from Dogfishhead.
Desert was apple pie with homemade banana-chocolate ice-cream and a mid-grade Sauternes.
The other great Thanksgiving tradition is lots of leftovers! :-)
