Greetings everyone! I'm joining the Initiative: My feelings about food and weight to tell you a little bit about my experience with this topic.
Ever since I was a little girl, I was plump. I was always overweight and because of that I felt self-conscious. It was hard for me to talk about my weight at school because I felt so ashamed of being fat that I would blush and end up crying in the bathroom.
I had never told anyone this before!
The worst time of the month at school was when they took us to the lunchroom to pass us. This was part of a feeding program that if it was determined that the student was underweight for age the school would include them in the program and give the children lunch and snack.
My classmates suffered because they would surely get into the program and could be teased for being underweight. Meanwhile I was at the end of the line shaking because I knew the jokes would be on me for outweighing everyone.
Now that I am an adult I realize that I was not obese, but by then I felt like one. I exercised at home but it wasn't enough to lose weight.
I don't remember ever being told by a pediatrician that I was overweight, nor do I remember any diet indicated for that. But at that time it was not a reason to go to the doctor.
Children can be very cruel to their classmates, so throughout elementary school that was my torture. Then when I went into development I grew a little more, I say a little because I'm 5'5" so I was short 🤭. And with that growth I lost weight.
It was what my mom said that the growth cycle took care of putting everything in its place.
After I got past development I gained the weight back. I think I ate too much. My mom is one of those moms who is happy if you eat everything you can eat and doesn't accept the fact that you save for later or don't eat, so in my house we were all overweight.
When I moved in with my boyfriend. I took control of my eating. I ate fruits and salads. I left aside fried foods, which I personally never liked. And I started going to the gym. I lost weight radically and I felt good about myself, I felt healthy and I wanted to stay that way.

The proposed topic is my feelings about food and overweight, I have never had a sweet tooth. My cravings for sweets and junk food are not frequent, in fact if I do crave some food it is always the kind I prepare at home. So I can't say that this is a weakness for me.
But reflecting on this overweight thing. I think it is important to maintain a weight appropriate to our physical constitution to be healthy, this above the stereotypes imposed on us of skinny figures to be accepted in society. I have never thought about fashion or looking thin to please others and that is the message I try to give to girls who worry about that. That's what I'm going to teach my daughter.
I remember when I was going through radiation therapy, I lost so much weight that I didn't recognize myself in the mirror. It was very hard to see myself like that. I thought that so many times I complained about my overweight and at that time I felt very bad to see my skeletal body.
So I think everything has to be a balance. The important thing is to feel comfortable with ourselves, our bodies and be happy, even if that happiness comes in the face of unhealthy food.
I hope you leave a comment if you agree with this.
