Reaching the age of 100 is something that has ceased to be a certainty and has instead become a mirage that gradually fades away over time. Decades ago, it was common to see many people reach their 70s and 80s fully lucid and brimming with energy to carry on. I remember that when I was a child in my hometown, a woman turned 100, and it was practically a regional holiday. Even the local newspapers and television stations produced a special program about this woman—and what was most impressive about her wasn’t exactly her age, but her physical, mental, and emotional well-being; she even had the energy to sing and dance to her favorite joropo.
With experiences like that, I think we all immediately ask ourselves: What’s the secret? How could I reach that age with the same zest for life? And then we start thinking about what we could do to take care of ourselves and prepare for that goal. A healthy diet, exercise, and a simple lifestyle are the first things to consider. Obviously, paying attention to our own health is also a priority, since it is precisely through our health that we can shape the way we live—aiming for a long life under the best possible circumstances. Because it’s not just about reaching that age—it’s also about how we get there, and the physical, mental, and emotional conditions that allow us not only to live but also to enjoy life.
Basic habits have taken on a unique value that we still fail to recognize in time. Eating healthy, getting rest, and maintaining balance seem like tasks that even a child could manage. Perhaps the mistake lies in the confidence we have in ourselves and in not giving these matters the importance they deserve when we feel like we’re doing fine. Things like getting too little sleep, eating at irregular times, and living at a breakneck pace are the opposite of what benefits us, and as ironic as it may seem, we sometimes struggle to do what’s best for us. It’s like constantly trying to live on the edge or at the limit of our abilities without realizing that, at some point, these imbalances will take their toll—and to a greater or lesser extent, they’re already affecting our lifespan.
As our friend
@angelica7 so aptly puts it in the introduction to this topic, the journey toward 100 years can be like a stroll, and we’ve all experienced something like that at some point. Certain things may lead us to realize that the further we go, the lighter our baggage must be—and I don’t mean that literally, but rather in the sense of leaving behind everything that might slow us down: the fear of moving forward, anxiety about tomorrow, or perhaps the weight of certain mistakes from our past can become an anchor that drags us down and prevents us from moving on. These things depend solely on us, and even if we feel a deep attachment to something, knowing where and when to say goodbye is also a sign of courage.
¿ Y si cien años no fueran suficientes?
It’s not that we’ll all be eager to live to be a hundred now. That’s not the point. Rather, the focus is on the path we want to chart from one point to another. Today we’re here, and tomorrow we’ll be one step closer to what we desire; that’s why it’s vital that we understand just how valuable our existence is. What if 100 years weren’t enough? If we could set a limit on our existence, what would it be? Understanding that everything serves the purpose of living, we wouldn’t even be able to name a specific number. Some people have realized that a great deal can be accomplished in such a short time and that life itself isn’t subject to an expiration date. For now, we’re on a path toward an age we’re in no hurry to reach—but one we do wish to reach with the desire to know that every minute of life has been worthwhile and that we feel no resentment or sense of debt toward ourselves, because we’ve understood that it’s not about numbers but about a journey we want to savor.
