I was recently talking to a woman while we waited for the bus, and of course it was hard not to bring up the problems with power outages and the economy, which is weighing down on us more and more without any mercy. As we discussed this topic, she suddenly mentioned the closure of a well-known business in the city after many years in operation. She even went so far as to say that during the economic crisis of 2015 and 2016, many businesses closed, while this one remained open, surviving a major economic crisis from which many were unable to recover. It really isn’t easy to keep a business going for several decades, and perhaps the key to enduring over time goes beyond a simple work ethic.

There’s no doubt that today, more than ever, there are more external factors you need to consider even before you start planning your business. It’s like trying to anticipate the storm before it hits you; if you don’t give it the attention it deserves, the result could be the last thing you want: an early closure. One day you might be full of anxiety and anticipation as you take your first steps, and suddenly you see it all vanish, leaving you quite frustrated. How did entrepreneurs in the past manage to sustain a business for so long? And we’re not just talking about longevity, but about the well-being of a business that never stops generating revenue and profits for you.

Unlike a few decades ago, tools are abundant, research is more thorough, and the vision for entrepreneurship has become quite broad. Even so, many struggle to anchor an innovative idea that will keep them afloat and sailing smoothly toward the success that every entrepreneur dreams of and desires from the very beginning. Perhaps starting a successful business has more to do with the attitude and character you bring to your goals than with the advantages and opportunities available to us in this current era. We can take advantage of any available advancements, but even so, it’s becoming increasingly difficult to create something immune to the forces that practically stifle our ideas.

Another factor to consider is how our own work yields a good income. I mention this because when discussing the key to success in business, our grandparents and long-time relatives talk to us about hard work and perseverance. That’s fine, and I know many people follow that advice to the letter, but even so, many feel that something else is missing. While some generations were able to turn very little into a great entrepreneurial idea, now that the stakes are higher, the risk of financial failure has also grown. Therefore, I believe it’s not about how many advantages and opportunities we have, but rather about knowing and understanding the times we live in and how we can make the most of our work.

The business the woman mentioned was very well-known in the city and is estimated to have been in operation for over 30 years. When we hear stories like this, we’re bound to ask ourselves: How did they do it? Were they never on the verge of closing down? What was their secret? And we may ask ourselves even more questions when it becomes difficult to sustain a business venture we started just a couple of years ago. We all want to achieve that kind of longevity in our careers and build a business that goes beyond a simple idea—one that neither time nor economic downturns can bring to an early end. It’s not that we want to work our entire lives, but a business that lasts a lifetime is a dream for any entrepreneur.
