The first of January is usually one of the best days of the year. This is because it signals a new start for just about everyone, it signifies the saying “out with the old and in with the new”. And many times, considering how the previous year had gone, we would have a lot of things to be thankful for. Things worth celebrating.
But then, life happens. Many of us would want to celebrate, but different issues will crop up. It could be money problems, or it could be health-related issues. It could even be that there is no one to celebrate with, and you are all alone. And it could surely be that you might have the money, but there are just not enough options on how to spend it, due to the season (trust me, I know about this very well).
I guess that is where something like today’s topic comes in, it just sort of slides in and fits in so smoothly. It is as if this is a topic I have been wanting to talk about for a long time, without even knowing about it. Well, today I got my chance. And I am going to tell you all what I would do if I had the power to make myself the perfect New Year’s day. Now remember, it says we don’t have to be realistic. So, I am going all in on this.
First off, I’ll make it snow right here in Nigeria!
Yeah, this is something I would very much like to see. I’ve been told that there really is no big deal in snow, after all, some people abroad see it as often as they see rain. I just want the snow during the Christmas festivities.
I can just picture the Christmas cheer in the air, with all the decorations and the warmth, then the floor would be white with snow while children are running around throwing balls of snow at each other and building snowmen.
This might bring in the cold, but then what else is new? This season has always been cold for us, what with the harmattan that we always face. We would just have to wear sweaters and hoodies to warm ourselves up and have a great time.
And Then, I will relive my childhood memories.
I would have said I would go back in time, but I don’t think that would be best. I would love to go through the Christmas period of my childhood. Back then when celebrations still had weight. We made use of everything for fun, from knockouts to fireworks.
That day, the entire neighborhood would be like a battleground, if you have a weak heart, you would best stay indoors and plug your ears with ear muffs. The sky would be filled with a beautiful myriad of colors that will keep on hitting it as more and more people launch fireworks into the sky. It will be a spectacle to behold indeed. Like something out of a postcard.
I will spend hours watching movies with my family.
I always spend my Christmas with my family, on Christmas and New Year’s day, we all spend it indoors, just having fun. Many times, we watch a movie together and this has become a tradition because it’s always fun. The living room will just be filled up, family members sitting on the floor, on couches, and everywhere, paying rapt attention to the TV screen.
Then of course, my siblings that just have to be talking. Dissecting the movie or saying something the storyline line made them think about. It is always enjoyable. I’m sad I missed this last one because during the year, it will be difficult to get all of us together in the same room and at the same time for that period of time.
And so, if I could, we would watch loads of movies together. Really interesting movies. I just want something comedic, it doesn’t have to be Christmas themed, just has to be enjoyable. Not something that will make us start questioning our purposes in life or all those deep movies that will have you settling into deep thoughts. Just something good enough for laughs and to have a good time. It would be a blast indeed.
And then, finally, there will be food. Lots of food!
Like, should this even be said? Food is just like a default setting, with or without powers it is happening. But then, with the powers, I can make the food to be inexhaustible. We would have it all, from chicken to goat meat, to rice, beans, and even garri as well. Why? Because why not?
The legs of our table will grow weak from the weight of all the food it will carry, our bellies will get so full that standing alone will be difficult. Everyone will eat to his fill, taking as many more helpings as they want. And then, you wash it down with any drink of your choice. Life is good.
In Conclusion.
Well, as you most likely know, I don’t have these powers. But still, I was able to make my season memorable. My first day of this year was nice and I had a good time. I am sure that next year will be even better. I am hoping that I will get to spend it with my family, so we would continue to uphold these traditions. I have found that such acts help to improve the bond between family members and make them always look forward to the next gathering.
But then, what else can we do except hope? We are still a long way from the next January first, so there is actually a lot that can still happen. Who knows, I may suddenly get the power to give myself the perfect day, or I just might get too much money I can buy the perfect day. No one knows tomorrow, anything at all can happen.
All in all, we would see how it unfolds. I am looking forward to experiencing it all.
