Six-ish years ago, back when I was still staying at the village, I remember one time when I was going somewhere one evening when I saw something that, for some reason, has stayed with me all this while.
I came across three old women. Like, they were really old. In their eighties or nineties. The kind that when you see them, you'll want to help them carry everything on their person. Yeah, that type of old.
Anyway, as they walked, I saw that they wanted to cross a gutter. The plank, however, was shaky; when you step on it, it wobbles, and if you're not properly balanced, you'd fall. And this was the only way to cross that particular area. So, what did these women do? I saw one of them step on the ladder, and on that end, she held it in place while the others crossed without any issues. And when they crossed, they held it down for her as well. And that's how all three of them crossed.
One of the things that struck me was their chemistry. They didn't look for help or anything; they didn't even discuss it. It was like a routine or pattern that they simply fell into once they got to the gutter. A synergy that had been built over the years.
So, you might wonder, what made me think about this? Well, this evening, I came across two old men who were in the same age bracket as the women were at that time. At least, that's what I believe. One of the men was blind, and the other one held his hand as they walked down the road.
At first, they were a quiet pair, but when I walked past them, I realised that they were both talking to each other under their breath. Whispering and conversing. And then, it wasn't simply a case of a man leading his blind friend; it was more. It looked like they were on a stroll, and thanks to his friend, the blind man was able to take strolls and move about.
It reminded me of those women I saw all those years ago, and I just saw chemistry and bonds that have been built over the years. Bonds scorched through loss, success, obstacles, and progress. These are people who have gone through so much in life and stayed together.
And then I wonder: if these people remained friends during their prime when things could have easily come between them, would they part when they were old and wrinkled? It just reminded me of friendships and how beautiful they are. If you are lucky enough to have one, it will last you a lifetime. And, sadly, not everyone will get to enjoy this.
Well, it is what it is.
