Honestly, I’ve always wondered how people who did things only because they felt pressured, they usually made it work. Like, there are a lot of people today who only do certain things simply because everyone else around them is doing it. And not because they genuinely want to. They just move with the herd, engage with the trending conversations surrounding that particular thing, and then when the herd has moved on, they do so too.
But that has never been my style. I don’t move with trends; I simply do what I want, when I want to, and the opinions or the fact that I might be the only one doing it doesn’t really move me. And this has to do with clothes and gadgets.
Some people buy clothes simply because they’re trending and everyone is wearing them. But once that dress stops trending, they dump it because it suddenly becomes ‘old’ even though it’s still new and good for use. The same can be said for phones and other gadgets. You can buy things to look good; you can buy them to look cool and chic. But buying them simply because everyone else is buying them is just insane. At least in my book.
Growing up, when I was in secondary school, one of the most taboo topics was the movie Spartacus. It was the rave of the moment because of the explicit sex scenes, and everyone who had watched it couldn’t keep quiet about it. The good kids publicly condemned it, and the naughty kids publicly praised it. I could have watched it then if I wanted to; I had access. But I just wasn’t interested. I didn’t gain any interest until well after my secondary school days. I stumbled on a clip of it online, and I found I actually liked it. That was how I got to binge-watch the entire show. At a time when all the hype had died down.
The same thing happened with Game of Thrones; I watched it more than five years after the final episode aired. By then, it was as if I was just catching up with the rest of the world, but I loved it that way. I was choosing to do it on my terms.
Well, you get the gist now. This was something that I was doing for several movies and TV shows. And as I got more active on social media, the clips I saw online were good for reeling me in for other movies and TV shows. Just one clip would make me want to start an entire show from the start. The Vampire Diaries and Pretty Little Liars are good examples of this.
I don’t purposely wait until it blows over; it just happens that during its run, I don’t pick up an interest in it. Until much later. Because the movies and shows that I do pick an interest in, I follow them back to back. These days, I can’t even afford to let more than a day go by before I watch new episodes, or everything would be spoiled for me the second that I come online. This is how serious it is.
In a nutshell, I’m just saying that I don’t move with pressure. This is not against those who watch films simply because everyone else is watching them. It’s just me saying that I watch what I want because I want to.
Well, it is what it is…
