I like that the prompt didn't ask us to think of something in the past; the old days and kind of just reminisce about it. Not just that feeling of nostalgia and then you leave it up there. Interestingly, it asks if we could bring back that thing to our modern day and world. I guess some people have probably gone beyond the nostalgic feeling of remembering these things and thought if they could still exist today.
When I look at the past; the good old days as we may call it, I find a vast array of things that the world today misses. That we as humans miss and that anyone who witnessed some of them would be glad to see them alive in today's world. It left me wondering sometimes if the advancements and growth, technologically and otherwise that we enjoy today are predicated upon the sacrifice of some of these things that we enjoyed in the old days.
To an extent, if you're seen holding on to some of those things today; the good practices, values, relationships and all, you're thought to be traditional, archaic and undeveloped. But is it so? Not really, not always so. Those very things could have still retained a place in our modern world, thereby making the world today a more pleasing and habitable place, more than ever. Combining elements of the old days and modern day would be a big win.
Yes, some things of the old days shouldn't find a way into our world today as they're indeed archaic, destructive and inhumane. Many of the various aspects of life and culture existed then. Doing away with such things is a good way to go. But that isn't the case because we see many of the good and beneficial things of the good old days thrown away. And as time passes by, they're constantly thrown away. Is it to accommodate our advancements?
For me, I'll like to bring back the good way of life that existed in the old days. A communal life where people looked out for each other, in love and oneness. Where neighbours aren't just people living around you or in the same compound with you, but people who are close to what you could even call family. People who you could entrust your valuables to keep in their hands as need be. Even to watch over your children, all with confidence and trust in them.
I look at the good old days and I see how life was simple, meaningful and graceful. I always remember how I was told that in those days, you could be travelling and when night caught up with you in a new and strange environment and you couldn't continue the journey, all you needed to do was find a house close by, introduce yourself and your situation and seek help, which does come. Things like this you only get to see today in movies. Life was once like that.
A different kind of relationship existed back then. One with unity, concern, care and genuineness. Even for relationships that are not family or romantic. People were genuinely invested in relationships in those days, unlike what we have today which has affected us and our world. We see a world today where many care for themselves alone and don't value relationships. Is it the demand of our modern, advanced world, or is it just us? The good old days are missed.
