Every August, we celebrate Buwan ng Wika, a celebration that reminds us of the importance of our language, culture, and identity as Filipinos.
During my Field Study experience, I got to see this celebration through one simple classroom activity: the learners created their own slogans about Buwan ng Wika. Looking at their outputs made me think about how important language is, especially inside the classroom.
Language is one of the most important tools of instruction. Teachers use it to explain lessons, give directions, ask questions, and communicate with learners. When learners understand the language being used by their teacher, it becomes easier for them to follow the lesson and express their own ideas.
This is especially important for young learners. Sometimes, a learner may know the answer but may have difficulty expressing it because of the language being used. Using a language that learners are familiar with can help them participate more comfortably and understand the lesson better.
But using language in teaching also has its challenges.
Learners have different levels of vocabulary, comprehension, and confidence. Some may understand Filipino better, while others may be more comfortable using another language. Because of this, teachers need to adjust the way they communicate. Sometimes, they need to use simpler words, examples, gestures, or even another language to make the lesson clearer.
This made me realize that language is not just a subject we study. It is also a bridge between the teacher and the learner.
The slogan activity was a simple example of this. The learners were given the opportunity to use language to share their own thoughts about Buwan ng Wika. Their outputs may have been short, but they showed that children can express meaningful ideas when they are given the right opportunity and guidance.
For me, that is one of the things worth celebrating during Buwan ng Wika.
It is not only about wearing traditional clothes or joining school activities. It is also about recognizing the role of language in how we learn, communicate, and understand one another.
As a future teacher, I hope to become someone who does not only teach through language, but also helps learners become more confident in using their own voice.
Because sometimes, learning begins with simply being able to understand and express yourself. 馃嚨馃嚟鉂わ笍
