One thing I started noticing during my Field Study experience is that not every learner who understands the lesson will raise their hand.
In a classroom, there are always learners who are quick to answer. They raise their hands even before the teacher finishes the question. They are comfortable speaking, sharing their ideas, and participating in activities. But there are also learners who stay quiet. They may not volunteer an answer, talk much with their classmates, or immediately participate in discussions.
At first, it can be easy to think that a quiet learner is not interested or does not understand the lesson. But after observing learners more closely, I realized that being quiet does not automatically mean being uninterested.
Some learners may need more time to process a question before answering. Others may be shy or simply more comfortable listening than speaking. There are also learners who might know the answer but are not confident enough to say it in front of everyone.
This made me realize that participation is not always about being the loudest person in the classroom.
A learner can participate by listening carefully, following instructions, writing their answers, working with a partner, or simply trying to complete an activity. These may seem like small things, but they can still show that the learner is engaged in the lesson.
As future teachers, I think we need to look beyond raised hands. Instead of only noticing the learners who always speak, we should also pay attention to those who rarely do. Maybe they just need encouragement, a little more time, or a learning environment where they feel safe enough to share.
This is one reason why I think teaching requires patience and observation. A teacher does not only teach what is written in the lesson. A teacher also learns to understand the learners in front of them.
My Field Study experience reminded me that every learner has a different way of learning and participating. Some voices are loud, while others are quiet. But quiet does not mean empty.
Sometimes, the learners who raise their hands the least may simply need a teacher who knows how to notice them.
