Moron: The sweetest memory I can no longer taste the same way馃馃尨
When I was a child, I had a simple dream: to have lots of money so I could buy all the ingredients my Lola needed to make moron. Back then, she could only make it once in a while because we didn鈥檛 always have enough money for the ingredients. Every time she cooked moron, it felt like a special occasion. I never knew that someday, I would have the means to buy those ingredients, but no longer have the person who made them taste like home. 馃ス
Moron is a traditional Filipino delicacy from Samar and Leyte, particularly loved in the Waray community. Made from glutinous rice, coconut milk, sugar, and chocolate, this soft and chewy rice cake is wrapped in banana leaves and steamed until cooked. Its rich, chocolatey flavor makes it a favorite pasalubong and merienda for many families.
But for me, moron has always been more than just food. It reminds me of my childhood, our simple life, and the happiness of eating something made by my Lola鈥檚 hands. I used to wish for more money so she could cook it whenever I wanted. Now, I realize that what I truly miss isn鈥檛 just the taste鈥攊t鈥檚 the person behind it.
If you still have someone who cooks your favorite food, cherish those moments. Sometimes, the simplest recipes become the memories we wish we could experience one more time.
Some flavors stay in our hearts long after the hands that made them are gone. 馃
