If I could choose any profession in the world, I would still choose teaching. As a Nigerian , many people look down on teachers because of how poorly they are paid, but mine is not actually because of money, yes it's not the highest-paying job, but because it is something I have a genuine passion for.
When I was still waiting for my admission letter into the university, I remember always calling all children around me during the holidays and will teach them one or two subjects, mostly English language and mathematics.
Teaching is more than just a profession, teacher are the nation builders, because every other profession lies on them, even though those other professions are now the hot cakes people rush into.
I studied Education in the university, and I'm already a teacher, and have obtained my Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) certificate. Even though the salary of teachers in Nigeria is not always encouraging, my love for children makes me want to continue. Sometimes, I think about how much effort teachers put into their work, especially when dealing with young children. It takes patience, understanding, and a lot of energy to help them learn and grow.
What attracts me to teaching is the opportunity to be part of a child's development. Children are still learning about the world, and I love the idea that I can contribute to shaping their knowledge, character, and confidence. There is something beautiful about watching a child understand something they struggled with before or seeing them improve little by little.
I know teaching is not always easy, and passion alone cannot pay the bills. Teachers also deserve better salaries and working conditions because the work they do is important. However, I don't want financial challenges to make me lose the love I have for this profession.
Teaching will teach you patience, tolerance and how to support others and honestly I have learned a lot from this profession.
If I had the opportunity to choose again, I would still choose to teach. I would only wish for a future where teachers are better appreciated, children have access to quality education, and those who dedicate their lives to teaching can live comfortably from their work.
For me, teaching is more than standing in front of a classroom and giving lessons. It is about making a difference, impacting good morals, attitude and values into a child. And that is why, despite the challenges, I would still choose to be a teacher.
This is my take on this..
