Hello Steemit Friends
I just wanted to share with you a phenomenon called the sardine run which happens once every year in Southern Africa between the months of May and July. During this time billions of sardines begin to spawn and move northward along the KwaZulu-Natal coastline. This phenomenon also dubbed "The Greatest Shoal On Earth" attracts all types of predatory fish, marine mammals and birds to work together causing a feeding frenzy which pushes the sardines closer to shore. Crowds of humans also begin to gather at these specific areas to join in on this action, there is plenty for all.
Some photos below taken of this year's sardine run.
People working together to pull in the nets, everyone gets there share.
Freshly caught sardines, be it canned, fried or used for bait have been featured in the lives of many south Africans some way or the other. Here are a local indian style recipe that you can try out for yourself.
5 Medium Sized Sardines
1 tsp Ginger & Garlic paste
3/4 tsp turmeric powder
1/2 tsp Red Chill powder
1 tsp Black pepper powder
1 tsp Lemon Juice
Coconut Oil
Curry Leaves
Salt
Step 1 : Clean and pat dry the cleaned fish using a kitchen tissue and make vertical slits along the side of the fish.
Step 2 : Make a fine paste with all the ingredients, using the oil.
Step 3 : Apply the paste onto the fish, make sure that you get enough inside the slits and not forgetting the fishes tummy.
Step 3 : Once the fish has been marinated, refrigerate for 1 hour.
Step 4: Add some coconut oil into a frying pan, add a little curry leave and shallow fry the fish on medium-low heat.
Step 5: Flip the fish carefully over after 6 to 8 minutes, pour a little oil over the fish, reduce the flame to low and fry for another 5 minutes.
Step 6: Once crisp, remove from heat and transfer the fish to a paper towel.
Serve while it is still hot and enjoy :-)
