Macuna pruriens also known as "Velvet beans" or "Devil beans" is a specie of wild beans that is found in many parts of Nigeria, especially the savannah regions.
Known as #Agbara" in Igbo, #Werepe" in Yoruba and "Karara" in Hausa, its a plant you never want to have bodily contact with if you are shy of public display or if you are the type that cherish your skin so much. And probably when you keep long nails.
Its a plant that induces serious itching that quickly spread from the area of contact to other parts of the body with the speed of sound. It gets worst when you decide to go for a shower while getting the sweet treatment, you are technically hellbound.
While i was still a teenager, i once went with friends to fish. Because of the tangle of vegetation on the river bank, we good not readily spot this plant. After settling down to our fishing game, we involuntarily shook the shrubs around us there by making the hairy parts of the pods to fall on us, without we knowing. Few minutes later, we started scratching. At first, it started lightly, so we thought it was mosquitoes..
But it got severe and instinct made one of us look up. Lo and behold! Few feet up above stood the blessed beans, in abundance, releasing it showers of itching elixir on us. We knew jumping into the water will only make it worse so we opted for the next available alternative, nature neutralizer, hot sands. We dived unto a nearby heap like olympic swimmers and had a thorough bath. Minutes later ( but it was like ages to us), the itching started ebbing and later on we were cured but you needed to see us! Three boys all grey and dusty like the terracotta armies featured in the mummy 3!
Well that was the end of our fishing for that day.
