It was my birthday.

I had a busy day: spent my morning at the office, had a lunch with my mother and then just a fun afternoon doing zumba with my colleagues.

All those hours I waited for her message: a phone call maybe or just a simple whatsapp. A message that would let me know that at least she had thought of me. A message that she hadn't forgotten her friend. Just one message...

The day flew by. And so did the memories.

The memories of our 9 years of friendship. Beautiful memories where we laughed together, cried together, where we were there for each other, no matter what.

Other friends came and went, but she and I always stayed together.

The day passed and by 8 o'clock I was having dinner with my neighbor. In between, I kept looking at my cell phone. No message.

By 11 o'clock, I was home and I didn't want to, but I looked again. I sat down on the couch with my cell phone. There was still an hour of time before my birthday was over. I was sure she would still whatsap.

Tick...tick...tick...the seconds clicked by. No message.

How could she forget me? Just because she had a boyfriend now? A guy she had only known for 3 months? For that guy she forgot her best friend? A tear slipped from my eye and left a trail on my cheek.

Not all friendships stay. Unfortunately....

This was a birthday I would not forget. And she is that friend I will never forget.
