‎A long time ago, I swore to myself that I would try to have a child until I was forty, because in Venezuela, we have this mentality that after that age you're too old to try. Besides, I think few things are as exhausting as struggling to get pregnant: doctor's visits, tests, treatments, the period that comes or doesn't come, the emotional pain because your body doesn't react as it should, the pain of seeing women have children and mistreat them while those of us who want them can't, having to explain to the world that it's not selfishness, it's biology, the physical and emotional pain, the helplessness, the money.

And yes, money, because we live in a world where there are tons of easy, quick, and cheap "solutions" to avoid or terminate pregnancy; but helping to conceive is an uphill battle. Having a child is a luxury that only couples who can't know the true cost of.

Closing the door on that dream of family has been a very difficult process. I've even questioned my decision because I still feel my body can do it, but I'm so tired. Just this afternoon, I went to sleep and had a dream where I was pregnant, and while climbing a mountain, I lost the baby. I woke up crying and wondered if my subconscious and my heart understand that I can't keep trying.

Closing the door on a desire, a dream, and something we truly want hurts. I think it's one of the hardest things anyone can face, especially when you're up against a society that doesn't understand that some bodies don't react the same way as others, that some families are very small, and that there are decisions God makes that we must accept.
‎
‎Sometimes not being able to do something makes us feel bad, makes us feel like failures... But closing the door on what wears us down and breaks our spirit isn't failure, it's liberation. It's understanding that everyone faces complex situations and that setting boundaries and saying "enough is enough" isn't losing, it's gaining.

Because the dream of being a mother remains intact, but protecting my mental health and my own peace is paramount. It hasn't been an easy path, especially when I didn't manage to realize that dream, but not all dreams come true, and understanding that there are limits, understanding that there are things that can't be achieved, is part of self-care and the mental capacity that human beings possess.

Because when we force certain situations to achieve our goals or our dreams, we may be walking down the opposite path of what is written for us. Sometimes motherhood doesn't bring that baby into the world, but far from being a failure, it's a different way of walking through life.

There are battles we don't choose to fight, but we must face them. Winning or losing will all depend on your perspective. Closing the door on that dream might be seen as a failure, but I choose to protect my peace and my life. Perhaps I'll spend the rest of my life dreaming of pregnancies, of children, because the fire of motherhood lives within me; but perhaps it wasn't meant to be in this life, and that doesn't make me any less of a woman.
