Today is Thursday and, as they say, your body just knows it. It’s that day of the week when nostalgia finds a place in our routine, allowing us to travel through pixels. I’m delighted to accept the invitation from my friend lanzjoseg@lanzjoseg to take part in his brilliant initiative “TBT: A photo, a story” because remembering isn’t just about reliving the past, but also about honouring the roots that keep us grounded, no matter how far we’ve flown.

A day of fluttering and a BatiBati

Here in Canada, the wind has a different character; it was cold today, even though it is autumn... these are hurried and sometimes melancholic times. But today is TBT on Hive, and as I look at this old photograph, the wind suddenly shifts. The cold air from my window magically transforms into that warm, heavy breeze of Caracas in the 2000s. In a split second, I am no longer in the North, but standing in that square paved with geometric stones, bathed in the unmistakable sun of our homeland.

At the centre of that concrete universe stands she: Sofía.

The image captures the exact moment when my little girl—with that noble spirit that defined her—squatted down to become the epicentre of a sea of grey feathers. If I close my eyes, I can hear the scene perfectly... The constant, guttural cooing of the pigeons filled the air, accompanied by the sudden clapping of wings whenever a new bird landed in the square seeking a handout or took sudden flight. Sofía wasn't afraid of them; on the contrary, she would reach out her little hand... To her, that Caracas square was always a sanctuary of life.

Beyond the circle of birds, the city went about its business. One could hear the heavy hum of traffic, the friction of tyres against hot asphalt, and the occasional distant, hurried honk—so typical of city life. But there was another sound—a sweeter one—making its way through the urban noise and the wind that played with my "Pan de Leche's" brown hair: the catchy, metallic melody of an approaching ice cream cart.

That sound promised our ritual. I already knew Sofía would ask for a BatiBati, excited by the grape ice cream and the final reward of the chewing gum hidden at the bottom of the little cup. And I, of course, would opt for the indulgence of a Magnum, waiting to hear the chocolate crack at the first bite. Sometimes I wonder if those ice creams still taste the same today, or if the flavour was perfect only because we shared them on those afternoons... Perhaps they aren't even sold anymore.

Today I share this memory with all of you, my dear readers. Because even as the years go by and landscapes shift from warm Caracas to the cold Canadian north, Sofía’s light remains undimmed. She is still there—in every free flutter of wings, in every sunny afternoon, and in the unfailing smile she gives me whenever I remember her.

If you want to take part, I think you’re still in time – you’ve got until 11.59 pm TODAY, THURSDAY, so hurry up and remember to obey the rules.
