[Eng./Esp.] Amendments to a Fickle Sky.

(With the sober, ironic and contemplative tone characteristic of the British lyrical tradition — in the style of Philip Larkin or Thomas Hardy —, drawing on autumnal imagery and lucid disenchantment).
From high rostrums, the architects of noon
alter yesterday’s gospel with a blink;
they swallow their words as the grey Thames—
or Lake Ontario’s chilled, indifferent swell—
swallows the smoke of passing barges.
No shame attends the shifted ground,
only the hollow trumpet of new certainty.
Down here, along the Queensway’s fading edge,
I tread a path that asks for no deceit.
October has made its usual, honest ruin:
a riot of bruised amber, russet, and rust,
settling upon the stone like ancient coin
whose value none remembers how to spend.
The harvest fowl was carved and blessed;
soon, small ghosts will clamour at the porch,
masking their breath against the coming frost.
Let them play at shadows.
At threescore years and ten, one learns the trade:
I have seen crowns melt into domestic lead,
and dogmas turn to leaf-mould in the wood.
They tell us destiny is sealed and parsed,
yet every maple bleeds its quiet gold
regardless of the prince’s morning speech.
The tide may turn, the ledger may be forged,
but the earth keeps no archive of their noise.

Ayer dijeron luz con voz de trueno;
ni memoria en la corte que aplaudió;
arde sin quemar sobre la acera;
un manto ocre, cárdeno y solemne
que amortigua el desfile de las horas.
Atrás quedó la mesa del dar gracias;
