Throughout my life, I had deprived myself of certain entertainments, as most of my time was spent going from one place to another, experiencing the vicissitudes of life, coming and going from work and the businesses I ran to survive and make ends meet. I didn't understand what fun was or the different forms it could take, because if I spent my money on something that wasn't material and that satisfied a need, I immediately felt like I was wasting my time and resources. I didn't know what it was like to feel and face music, but nevertheless, I loved music and listened to it all the time, on my way to and from work, at home while doing various chores, and at the office at my new job.
I faced the music, I faced the music that day when I was there. I stood in the crowd, with a smile that couldn't fit on my face, my heart beating a million times a second as if my heart were part of the musical instruments surrounding me. The lights dimmed, and everything was about to begin: the best night of my life.
It was my first concert. Many couldn't believe that at my age I'd never been to one before. And it wasn't just any concert; it was my favorite singer's concert, an Arjona concert. For a long time, his music had moved me and made me understand myself in a dimension I'd never known before. His words had accompanied me in the solitude of my silence and had been a consolation through breakups, heartbreak, and long, hopeless nights.
I had saved up for that moment because the price was a bit steep, plus I'd just started working from home and was tied to finances and surviving month to month. Every dollar saved was a note for the melody I so desperately wanted to hear. I was afraid the experience wouldn't be pleasant, but when I arrived, the place was packed, completely packed, people crowding and pushing, my seat wasn't what I expected; it was total chaos. And there, amidst my doubts before starting, I faced the situation, I faced the music literally. Going to a concert is a totally different experience than listening to recorded music. There was noise, there were uncomfortable people.
But everything changed when the first chords sounded, and I began to experience the music while living a unique experience, one that touched all my senses, not just my hearing.
"Are you having fun?" a girl next to me asked.
"Yes, a lot, it's my first time at a concert," I replied.
"Well, close your eyes and you'll see how different everything feels," the girl told me.
That's exactly what happened: when I closed my eyes, the music transformed into textures that caressed my skin, colors that shone behind the darkness of my eyelids. That night, they played my favorite songs and others from the new album that I didn't know as well but that I fell in love with anyway, becoming some of my favorites today.
During the breaks, I exchanged words with the new friend I'd made, unaware that that night we would both end up in a bar talking about our lives and how much we enjoyed music.
I learned so much from that girl. I learned that every word in a song forces you to look inward, to recognize stages of your life.
With this girl, I waited for new Arjona albums, and she shared with me other singers she liked that I didn't know. She faced and loved music like no one else, and I loved her as she loved music, but our love was fleeting, like a song that ends in soft chords.
In the end, I didn't want to leave, neither the concert nor that girl's life. The lyrics of the songs keep ringing in my chest, but I had to let them go because, like music at a concert, things don't always sound the way we expect, and facing the music means accepting that songs have a beginning and an end.
