This summer, I was away from home for an artist residency. There was no oven where I was staying, so instead of baking bread myself, I enjoyed bread from local bakeries and the dense, seed-packed loaves from the supermarket.
But I really, really wanted to bake again. So when I came home, one of the first things I made was ciabatta — something that almost never goes wrong and works for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.
I also started a new sourdough starter, and today is day four. If all goes well, I should be able to bake my first sourdough loaf since coming home this weekend.
Bread making is fun, delicious, and something I can adjust completely to my own taste. I also think there is something quietly confidence-building about being able to make such a basic everyday food by myself.
It reminded me again how much I love baking bread.
