This morning I was waiting to be served by a teller at the bank and was in a queue. There were two older women behind me in the line who started a conversation.
They both turned out to have granddaughters around the age of 11. They were discussing how the girls spend a lot of time on their tablets and how they ask many quesions and the exchange went something like this:
Grandma 1: My granddaughter has a mouth on her - she speaks her mind!
Grandma 2: I would call it an opinion & I don't think there is anything wrong with that.
Grandma 1: The younger generation has no respect - & that's no good.
Grandma 2: I think that the younger generation is able to voice their opinion because they are not afraid - & that's a good thing. When we were young we did not say our opinion because we were afraid to do so. Did you like that?
Grandma 1: My granddaughter asked me when she should have sex!
Grandma 2: And what did you tell her?
Grandma 1: What did you want me to tell her. I never spoke about such things !
Grandma 2: Because you were afraid. I would have told her when you feel ready to do so ....
The exchanges continued for a while and it was obvious that Grandma 1 did not like being challenged and stuck to her guns. At the same time, Grandma 2 had a smug smile and was comfortable with her arguments and did not budge at all.
At one point they looked at me and it seemed that they were going to ask for my input - when my number was called ...
