I just want to share something. While on my way to work, and I overheard two ladies talking about how they still haven’t been accepted for a job.
They were saying that most of the people who got hired are pretty, have good posture, dress well, and know how to answer interview questions.
It made me remember my own experience when I was looking for a job, so I decided to share my story here because I also experienced the same thing.
Let me share my own experience as an example.
After I graduated from college, I started looking for a job right away. I can’t even remember how many companies I applied to because there were so many to mention. Most of the time, I was rejected. It’s funny how they ask for experience when you’re a fresh graduate. That’s exactly why we’re applying in the first place—to gain experience. Haha.
Usually, the people who got hired were those who were good at answering questions, looked presentable, and dressed nicely.
Compared to them, I was very simple. I couldn’t afford nice clothes at that time because I was still looking for a job and I didn’t have any income yet.
Some people are also lucky because their families can already afford nice clothes and other things, so they can look more presentable when applying for a job.
I understand that HR looks at many things when hiring, such as school background, appearance, confidence, and how you answer questions.
For me, my biggest problem was that I was not really a talker, and I always got nervous during interviews. Because of that, I felt like I was not good enough during interviews.
Until one day, during my final interview, I decided to be brave and speak honestly.
I told the interviewer:
“Ms., if you give me a chance to be hired and become part of this company, I will prove to you that I deserve this position. I may not be a good talker, but once I start working, I can deliver and do my job well.”
I also told her that sometimes, people who are very good at interviews are not always the ones who stay long in a company. Some may work for a few months and then leave because they are confident that they can easily find another job.
That was just my honest opinion based on my own experience.
And guess what? I got hired. 😅
Later on, I worked in HR and was assigned to Recruitment and Selection. Because of this experience, I learned that sometimes, I also prefer applicants who are quiet or not very talkative, but are willing to learn and work hard.
After three months as an HR Assistant, I was regularized because management said that I was doing well and was effective in my position.
After nine months, my HR Supervisor submitted her resignation. Management called me and offered me her position. They wanted me to become the next HR Supervisor.
Unfortunately, I also decided to resign because my brother asked me to help with his business.
That’s a little part of my journey when I was applying for jobs.
Sometimes, you just need the courage to speak up and tell people what you can do. You may not be the best at interviews, but you can prove yourself once you are given the chance.
And just to be clear, I am not saying that people who are good at interviews are not good at work. That is not what I mean.
This is only based on my personal experience.
Some people are good at interviews and are also great at their jobs. Everyone has different strengths and different stories.
To the ladies I encountered this morning, don’t give up. Maybe you just need one person to give you a chance.
What was your experience when you were applying for jobs?
Thank you dear hivers and see you on my next blog.
I personally took the photos for my content, where interviewed was staged for content purposes only. All the photos are mine, and some of them were edited using CapCut.
