SILENCE COURSE by The Art of Living.
Let me tell you about my day—or rather, my afternoon. Today at 6:00 PM (Cuba time), my "Silence Course," or "Part II," began. It is a mandatory 4-day course focused on learning how to remain in silence. I say "mandatory" because it is a prerequisite for the Art of Living classes—a two-year yoga program.
Today, on the first day, there wasn't exactly much silence; instead, we spent a little over two hours on introductions and interacting with the other participants.
Silence Course
Here’s a bit about how it went:
There were 19 of us in total, including the two instructors. The course is being held online via Zoom. The cost was 1,700 CUP (approximately $1.97 USD). At the start, the instructors led the session and provided general instructions. They gave us a brief refresher on "Part I"—the first segment of this mandatory course.
They also discussed the tools we would be using, as well as the dietary guidelines for the coming days.
Required items include a computer or tablet with Zoom, a yoga mat, a warm blanket, cushions, a water bottle, paper, a pen, and comfortable clothing.
As for meals, a fresh, plant-based vegetarian diet is recommended—think fruits, oats, soups, lentils, or kitchari—while avoiding processed foods, garlic, onions, and eggs.
These requirements seem manageable. I usually eat meat, so these four days of vegetarian eating will be a new experience for me.
After a while, the instructors divided us into smaller groups on several occasions. We were tasked with sharing experiences from our lives:
The first time we were split into groups was for introductions. Our class includes Spanish speakers from Argentina, Chile, Cuba, and elsewhere. The introductions lasted only a few minutes before we returned to the main session.
In the second breakout session, we were instructed to spend four minutes each voicing complaints. It was an interesting exercise; we realized that because the complaints were being expressed consciously, they didn't sound the same as they do when we complain in our everyday lives.
The third session required us to list 10 positive traits for each person—something that didn't come quite as easily.
In the fourth session, we had to list 10 negative traits—which, by contrast, came very easily.
These were excellent, dynamic exercises that helped us understand how our minds function when they haven't been trained to think in a positive way.
As you can see in the photos, there is a lot of darkness—the result of power outages. Due to a variety of factors, our island of Cuba is currently facing a very difficult situation regarding electricity. Yet, despite these prolonged blackouts, the course continues, allowing us to keep learning and work toward completion.
I’m taking this opportunity to create a bit of art amidst the gloomy late afternoon and evening.
I like the tones in this photo—the shadows, the light.
But... the show must go on...
After a while, once it got completely dark, there were so many mosquitoes, so I headed into my room. I have a blue LED light in here, so everything has a bluish tint—hehe...
Time flew by, filled with new insights and conversations.
To wrap things up, there were a couple of guided meditations led by the instructors and Gurudev.
These meditations are truly enjoyable, thanks to the deep, wonderful relaxation brought on by the breathing exercises.
And then, it was time to say goodbye...
I’m certain that tomorrow I’ll learn a great deal about Silence—which goes far beyond the simple act of not speaking.
See you tomorrow for part two of this Silence Course.
Until soon...

CURSO DE SILENCIO Por El Arte de Vivir.
Te voy a contar mi día.
Me parecen cosas logrables.
