Hello everyone!!!
I hope you are well or are trying to be well. I feel fine today except for a little stomach ache, but I still have no energy. Although I don't want to move a muscle, I also want to write this blog and I have a rare thing I want to share with you.
It looks like it will be a long one, so buckle up and let's hit the road.
I can say that the fact that our main guide in the Aegean region was not as hasty as in the Marmara region gave me a lot of rest because it was difficult to get up at 5 am and get ready for this trip, which I continued without a break. This time, although not that early, we got up early and set off. Fortunately the sun was up.
Now you can see that I have given up my eyeliner that makes me struggle 😂 Anyway. Since I was sitting almost at the back of the bus, I was a little more comfortable and we were sleeping instead of talking on the way so that we could gather our energy.
Location
This photo was one of the sights I came across when we first arrived in Priene. The road we continued on in Aydın was about 100 kilometres away from Ephesus. Priene is actually an Ionian city according to what is known and it was built about 10 kilometres north of the famous Menderes River, which I think is very clever. The distance to the water source is not bad at all. Especially considering that the sea and rivers were wider and bigger than we know now, it is not difficult to guess that this distance was not 10 kilometres.
Again, almost like in every ancient city I've ever seen, we climbed something. I remember I mentioned that this was their defence mechanism. They built a city with their backs against a mountain or on the highest part of a hill in order to keep the enemy under control. Like Helm's Deep in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Theatre
As you can see from the information boards above, we came to the theatre section. Frankly, it was a little smaller than I expected. the presence of the theatres in other ancient cities made themselves felt a little more.
Again, the fact that it is leaning against the slope and dated to the 3rd century BC shows us the Ancient Greek foundations, while the Prohedria, that is, the seats of honour, which you can see in the photo below, were only found in the Ancient Roman Period. We also know that the 3rd century BC was the Hellenistic Period.
Although this theatre is a small theatre with a capacity of 6500 people, it is very well preserved. I think nature helped in this because it was surrounded by trees.
Bouleuterion
If you remember, there was a Bouleuterion in Ephesus and we sat there and talked about current issues. This area used for the assembly was different from the others. This one is even different from them because it is angular. The circles they normally made to keep the seating area smaller but functional have turned into corners here.
In this part, I can make a comment that they are no longer interested in making space for someone, but they are interested in comfort. There is also clear evidence that this area is enclosed. So, can we say that this area was more of a place for secret meetings or that the line between the public and the assembly was sharpened?
Temple of Athena
I can say that the columns you see here are the tallest structures in the neighbourhood. After all, they were removed again after the excavations, but they are still magnificent. This temple is dedicated to Athena. Considered as the protector of this city, Athena is the goddess of wisdom and war.
In fact, Herodotus even has a discourse about this city. I won't quote him directly, but he says that if the Ionians had moved 100 metres down, 100 metres up or 100 metres away from the sea, it would not have been so beautiful. They found the most ideal place and this makes Ionia important, although perhaps not as important as Miletus or Ephesus. Especially visually.
Streets and Waste Water Channels
Actually, there are many things to talk about this part. They did not need to build a cistern like the other ancient cities of the Aegean region, especially since the clean water source was in the neighbourhood, but I think what was done to carry the water into the city, especially in the Roman period, is marvellous. Of course, this does not apply to this ancient city, but to the whole Roman Empire in general. They used technology in a marvellous way.

I can say that it is shorter than I thought. I did not want to touch on historical events like last time. If you want to learn a little more about daily life, I recommend the book called A Day in Ancient Greece. It gives you an idea about the period.

Konum
Priene'ye ilk vardığımızda karşılaştığım manzaralardan biriydi bu fotoğraf. Aydın'da devam ettiğimiz yolumuz, Efes'in 100 kilometre kadar uzağındaydı. Priene bilinenlere göre aslında bir İyon şehri ve çok zekice olduğunu düşündüğüm şekilde meşhur Menderes nehrinin 10 kilometre kadar kuzeyine kurulmuş. Su kaynağına uzaklığı hiç de kötü değil. Özellikle de o zamanlarda denizin ve nehirlerin şu anda bildiklerimizden daha geniş ve büyük olduğunu düşününce aslında bu mesafenin 10 km olmadığını tahmin etmek çok da zor değil.
Yine neredeyse, gördüğüm, her antik kentte olduğu gibi yine bir yerlere tırmandık. Bunun onların savunma mekanizması olduğundan bahsettiğimi hatırlıyorum. Bu tiyatronun 6500 kişilik küçük bir tiyatro olmasına rağmen oldukça iyi korunmuş durumda. Sanırım doğa bu konuda yardımcı olmuş çünkü buranın çevresi ağaçlarla doluydu.
Bouleuterion
Hatırlarsanız Efes'te de bir Bouleuterion vardı ve orada oturup güncel sorunlar hakkında konuşmuştuk. Meclis için kullanılan bu alan diğerlerinden daha farklıydı. Bu ise onlardan da farklı çünkü köşeli. Normalde oturma alanını daha küçük ama işlevsel tutabilmek için yaptıkları daireler burada köşeli oluvermiş.

Athena Tapınağı
Bu gördüğünüz sütunlar çevrede bulunan en yüksek yapı diyebilirim. Sonuçta kazılar sonrası tekrar ayağı kaldırıldılar fakat yine de görkemliler. Bu tapınak Athena'ya adanmış. Bu kentin koruyucusu olarak kabul edilen Athena, bilgelik ve savaş tanrıçasıdır.
Aslında bu kent ile ilgili Heredot'un bir söylemi dahi bulunuyor. Direkt alıntılamayacağım ama dediğine göre İyonyalılar 100 metre aşağı, 100 metre yukarı ya da 100 metre denizden uzaklaşsalar bu kadar güzel olamazdı. En ideal yeri bulmuşlar ve bu İyonya'nın belki Miletos veya Ephesus kadar olmasa da önemli kılıyor. Özellikle de görsel açıdan.
Caddeler ve Atık Su Kanalları
Aslında bu kısımla ilgili çok fazla konuşulacak şey var. Özellikle temiz su kaynağı çevrede bulunduğundan dolayı, diğer Ege bölgesi antik kentleri gibi, bir sarnıç yapma gereksinimi duymamışlar fakat suyu şehrin içine taşımak için özellikle de Roma Dönemi'nde yapılanlar bence muazzam. Tabii bu söylediğim bu antik kent için değil genel olarak bütün Roma İmparatorluğu için geçerli. Teknolojiyi harika bir şekilde kullanmışlar.
Son
Düşündüğümden daha kısa olduğunu söyleyebilirim. Geçen seferki gibi tarihi olaylara değinmek istemedim. Biraz daha günlük yaşamlar hakkında bilgi edinmek isterseniz eğer Antik Yunan'da Bir Gün isimli kitabı size öneririm. Dönem hakkında bir fikir edinmenizi sağlıyor.
