Hello everybody!
I recently traveled to a town in Tarragona (Spain), called Amposta. It just happened to be the weekend of San Juan, which is the night of June 23 from 12 pm. This night is celebrated in honor of St. John in the Christian festival but also retains some paganism as it marks the summer solstice and supposedly, it is the shortest night of the year (although in reality, it is the 21st).
The celebration in my country consists of making bonfires, in this case they were also made near the beach. Many people come to see the fire show and there are also lots of firecrackers and pyrotechnics (which is why I didn't take my dog with me on this trip).

Hace poco viajé a un pueblo de Tarragona (España), llamado Amposta. Justo coincidió que fue el fin de semana de San Juan, que es la noche del 23 de junio a partir de las 12 de la noche. Esta noche es celebrada en honor a San Juan en la festividad cristiana pero también conserva algo de paganismo ya que marca el solsticio de verano y supuestamente, es la noche más corta del año (aunque en realidad, es la del día 21).
La celebración en mi país consiste en hacer hogueras, en este caso se hacían también cerca de la playa. Muchas personas se acercan a ver el espectáculo del fuego y también hay muchísimos petardos y pirotecnia (razón por la que no me llevé a mi perra conmigo en este viaje).
While we were waiting for the night to come, we went to sunbathe and swim in the sea. In my city (Zaragoza), we don't have sea as it is an inland city. So in summer we usually escape to the coast for a swim. Tarragona, as a general rule, is the favorite destination for people from my city because it has the closest beaches, about 3 hours by car.
Mientras esperábamos a que llegase la noche, fuimos a tomar el sol y bañarnos en el mar. En mi ciudad (Zaragoza), no tenemos mar ya que es una ciudad de interior. Así que en verano solemos escaparnos a la costa para darnos un baño. Tarragona, por norma general es el destino preferido de la gente de mi ciudad por tener las playas más cercanas, cerca de 3 horas en coche.
We visited the beach of Sant Carles de la Rapita which was a nearby town, and also the beach "the trabucador", which is very large and extensive, allows the entry to motorhomes to park on it, dogs are also allowed and until recently was paid, but from this year is free entry to this beach.
What is striking about this location is its proximity to the delta of the Ebro river, this river also passes through my city and reaches here, where it flows into the sea. So yes, there were a lot of mosquitoes. I had not even got out of the car and I already had several bites of these annoying insects, I had to spend a bottle of mosquito spray on my body during my stay, and I still had to buy another one at the supermarket.🤣
Visitamos la playa de Sant Carles de la Ràpita que era un pueblo cercano, y también la playa "el trabucador", que es muy grande y extensa, permite la entrada a autocaravanas para aparcar en ella, los perros también son permitidos y hasta hace poco era de pago, pero a partir de este año es gratuita la entrada a esta playa.
Lo que llama la atención de esta localización es su cercanía con el delta del río Ebro, este río también pasa por mi ciudad y llega hasta aquí, donde desemboca. Así que sí, habían muchos mosquitos. No había ni bajado del coche y ya tenía varias picaduras de estos molestos insectos, tuve que gastar un bote de spray antimosquitos en mi cuerpo durante mi estancia, y aún tuve que comprar otra en el supermercado. 🤣
On the right side of this beach, it looked like a huge pond; with no waves, we could see the fish swimming and even some crabs. My companion grabbed a crab with his hands to show it to me and the poor animal, scared, pinched it with his claws trying to escape and be returned to the water.
En el lado derecho de esta playa, parecía una charca enorme; sin oleaje, podíamos ver los peces nadar e incluso algún cangrejo. Mi acompañante agarró un cangrejo con sus manos para enseñármelo y el pobre animal, asustado, le dio un pellizco con sus pinzas intentando escapar y que lo devolvieran al agua.
On the left side of the sand, we had the sea itself, with its swell.
Al lado izquierdo de la arena, teníamos el mar propiamente dicho, con su oleaje
Despite the fact that there was a bar on the beach (quite expensive, by the way) we left to have a drink in a place called "Restaurant La casa de fusta". Along the way we saw that in the area, and specifically in this town, there are many rice plantations.
A pesar de que allí había un bar en la playa (bastante caro, por cierto) nos marchamos para tomar algo en un lugar llamado "Restaurant La casa de fusta". Por el camino vimos que en la zona, y concretamente en este pueblo, hay muchas plantaciones de arroz.
When we got to the restaurant we ordered a couple of drinks and we saw that they have a corral with various types of birds: from pigeons, chickens, roosters, to turkeys.
Cuando llegamos al restaurante nos pedimos un par de bebidas y estuvimos viendo que tienen un corral con varios tipos de ave: desde palomas, gallinas, gallos, hasta pavos.

Also a collection of old machinery that was used to work in the fields.
También una colección de maquinaria antigua que se usaba para trabajar en el campo.
In the afternoon we went for a walk around the town. In amposta there are several interesting ruins in the old part. There is an old fortress from the 10th century, the defense tower and the wall, which are from a few centuries later. The castle is now a cultural center, which retains part of its old and new structure.
Por la tarde fuimos a dar un paseo por el pueblo. En amposta hay varias ruinas interesantes en la parte antigua. Hay una antigua fortaleza del siglo X, la torre de defensa y la muralla, que son de algunos siglos más tarde. El castillo es ahora un centro cultural, que conserva parte de su estructura antigua y nueva.
From here, you can see good views of the river and the suspension bridge.
Desde aquí, pueden verse unas buenas vistas del río y del puente colgante.
The streets were lined with pots of various plants and flowers.
Las calles estaban llenas de macetas de diversas plantas y flores.

Apparently, they were inspired by the Brooklyn Bridge in New York.
Al parecer, se inspiraron en el puente de Brooklyn en Nueva York.
Finally night fell and we approached the nearest bonfire. I thought there would be no mosquitoes as there were all the firecrackers, fireworks and bonfires burning with the fire but there were and they bit me again xD.
Al fin cayó la noche y nos acercamos a la hoguera más cercana. Pensaba que no habrían mosquitos al estar todos los petardos, espectáculo de pirotecnia y las hogueras ardiendo con el fuego pero sí que habían y volvieron a picarme xD.
It is a magical spectacle because of what they say that fire "purifies", and it is a celebration in which many people take advantage of to get rid of the old, to give entrance to the new. I hope you enjoyed the tour and we'll see you in the next one.😄
