Introduction
Hi! @saydie here playing Splinterlands everyday.
This is Exploring the Chaos where I take a look on Chaos Legion and now also the Riftwatchers cards, as they brought new abilities that changes how we play the game.
The last Chaos Legion ability that I tackle would be Backfire. An ability that deals damage back to the opponent when they miss thier attack on the opponent with this type of ability. With this week's post, I will talk about Reflection Shield, an ability that negates any damage from any reflected damage such as Magic Reflect, Return Fire and Thorns or against Blast which is an indirect damage inflicted on monsters adjacent to the original target.
![]() | This Monster is immune to all indirect, or reflected damage. That means that it will not take damage from Blast, Thorns, Return Fire, or Magic Reflect. |
Prons
- Complete immunity from Magic Reflect, Return FIre, Thorns and Blast.
Cons
Still will take damage as long as it was directly attacked.
Was still affected by Backfire as the damage fro this card was not from a reflected attack.
For the longest time, indirect and reflected damage has been one of the hardest to beat abilities in the game but with Reflection Shield, we now have ways to counter this this abilities.

Lore
Ash mirages are often mistaken for inanimate deadwood. In reality, they are fiery spirits that live in the husks of long-dead trees, their charred wood glowing with embers of ash as they lumber across the hot plains and deserts of the Burning Lands. If threatened, they defend themselves by flinging fireballs and flaming branches at their enemies.
When the Chaos Legion encroached upon the desolate lands of the ash mirages, they harassed the creature, taking sharp axes to their sturdy shell of wood. For a time, the ash mirages avoided the invaders, but the Riftwatchers arrived and convinced them to fight back. Thereafter, the ash mirages would sneak within range of their foes’ camps and attack them with salvos of devastating infernos. Continue Reading...

Gwen Stormsong was born and raised on the aquatic realm of Lemell. From an early age, she had a strong connection to the elemental mana of water. To foster her abilities, her parents sent her to train with the druids of Lemell. Gwen spent her formative years on the water, learning how to channel its power. While some druids specialized in offensive spells, Gwen preferred to use her powers to help others.
When a great hole ripped the sky open and tentacles slithered forth, chaos swept across the land, decimating cities and the landscape. And after the dark god drained the realm of mana and the Chaos Legion moved on to its next conquest, Lemell was a very different place. Nearly all life had been wiped out. The landscape was destroyed. Everything Gwen loved was gone.
She traveled by boat across the island and archipelagos, searching for survivors. She joined a handful of refugees who had survived, hidden in the caves of a craggy atoll. Gwen was devastated and spent many days in a deep depression, barely eating and hardly sleeping. Continue Reading...

The vampire now simply known as the Tide Biter was once a human. He was a sailor who loved the seas, and all of his adventures were successful due his powerful water mana spells. As a mage and captain of his ship, he commanded great respect and admiration. When a vampire attack caught his ship on the open ocean, however, he was nearly killed. Bitten and thrown to his death in the water, the sailor thought his time had come.
His powerful connection with the water saved him. He healed his mortal wounds, but could not stop the vampirism from transforming him. He knew his old life was gone. He embraced a new life of piracy, sailing under the moon and drinking the blood of murders and theives. If he was to be cursed with this disease, he would use its power to enact his own form of justice.
The Tide Biter is fueled with a vengeance for the manner of his change. Sailing across the seas of Praetoria, he hunts the vampire that turned him. With the love of his crew behind him, he sails the open waters of the Splinterlands, forever hunting his quarry. Continue Reading...

One of the most dangerous warlocks to fight within the Chaos Legion ranks, the Revealers are often released within the first waves of attack. Almost like casting a stone into a pool and watching the ripples unsettle the surface before the small waves break over the edges, the Revealers spread terror amongst their foe, indiscriminately casting their magic with dire effect whilst almost immune to the damage and enchantments thrown back at them. It is said that even their own allies fear them and it’s not unusual for a Revealer to turn upon their own in the name of their goddess, Kuktune, being as they are, so obsessed with death and destruction.
Reading the scriptures from the worn tablets of skin, Revealers learn of Kuktune when they are acolytes in the Temple of Demise, floating within the unstable rift of Wvytoc. It teaches them that only death and destruction will please their goddess, and anything less than complete obedience will earn her painful wrath. As a result, the Revealers care little as to where they might be sent, wanting only to kill for Kuktune and bring her glory. Not only have they been known to turn upon their own allies when the enemy have been killed, but it is also written that a good, conscientious Revealer will harm itself if there is nothing else left to destroy. Lore
Long ago, Kain Hace was considered the most powerful warlock in all of the Belurocian Empire. It was rumored that he had forged a dark pact with a greater archfiend to gain his immense power. Others believed it was Yzaos himself, God of Death and the Lower Planes, through whom Kain channeled his magic.
Yet in spite of his awesome power, Kain sought neither conquest nor control. Instead, he used his magic to serve the Belurocian Empire and its people. He was the hero of the Onyx Wars, decimating the Silver Shield’s armies outside the gates of Beluroc. When drought and famine threatened the empire, he called upon the shadows and the darkness to blanket the land in thunderheads; torrential rains fell and crops rose high in their fields once more. He tamed the eruptions of Bren Ha, keeping the volcano dormant. He stood against the eldritch monstrosities of the Dark Oblivion. He feared nothing… well, almost nothing. Continue Reading...

While many call him a vigilante, Harlan Lowcastle prefers “Hero of the People.” Growing up in a large city, Harlan saw a great deal of suffering as the powers that be looked on with indifference or, even worse, used it to their advantage. Despite his upbringing in a wealthy family of the upper class, he left his life behind. His parents disowned him, but he didn’t care. There were bigger problems in the world.
After that, Harlan lived on the streets of the inner city, staying on the move and helping those in need, providing food, medical supplies, and access to other subsistence they required to survive. When he couldn’t get it legally, he had no qualms about using other means. To Harlan, the wealthy were nothing but gluttons and abusers who ignored the misery of others while hording their own riches and living a life of excess. Continue Reading...

Over time, the Riftwatchers have developed and refined a suit powered by pistons, gears, and dragon magic. A marvel of runic engineering, it allows its wearer to take flight and soar through the sky on mechanical, dragon-like wings. Using reinforced tubes, the user can release precision beams of fire from the palms of their hands. The suit’s sophisticated servos and actuators are extremely responsive to the natural movement of the body, providing extraordinary agility while in flight.
It takes years of training to become proficient in the use of these suits. Thankfully, runemancers have installed certain safeguards to reduce the mortality rate of trainees, such as crash avoidance, unconsciousness-activated auto-flight, and a projectile warning system. Continue Reading...

In time immemorial, the realm was beset by innumerable calamities: a thick cloud of poison that choked the air, the swelling of the sun, drowning floods, terrible storms, earthquakes that shook the land and brought great mountains to ruin, and the fading of ley lines.
Subsequently, the boundaries between this realm and other realms and planes grew frail and, eventually, broke down. Creatures never before seen spilled forth, and great tides of elemental mana filled the ether.
Wars raged as various factions vied for supremacy, bringing an already ruined realm to even greater ruin. Ultimately, none emerged victorious. In their fervor for ultimate power, they destroyed each other and, in the process, themselves. Continue Reading...

Few have heard about the secret mission of the pious order, The Bloody Envoy. These devout monks spend their young lives living within the Hidden Cloister, a monastery that is said to be somewhere within Abbots Marsh on Praetoria, and beholden to no other. Taken at an early age, these children are the unfortunate offspring of women that have been used for entertainment by vampires at their lavish parties. After being brought into their new family, the children spend their time studying and praying, learning to live with the dhampir affliction that has taken their bodies. They are taught that to drink the blood of a human is the ultimate sin, and they sustain themselves upon the livestock they keep.
They are drilled daily in the art of unarmed combat, though violence is always a last resort. Instead, they are taught many different skills in ways to hide from or avoid attack, often using these skills to augment those around them who will do the damage in their stead. When they come of age, they will often stalk vampires and follow them to their homes, where the Bloody Envoy will then organize the foul creature’s demise. Continue Reading...

Lore
For generations upon generations, the Riftwatchers have pursued the Chaos Legion across realms and seen them drained of magic by the dark god, Uul. They collected the cast-off dregs of war, repurposing what they could salvage into weapons, gathering their strength and building an arsenal for the day when they would face off against their enemy.
One such weapon is the runicore, or “runi” as it is also known.
The runi is a collection of spare parts gathered by the Riftwatchers’ junkers: armor, clothing, corpses, and anything else that can serve as a body; weapons that range from axes, swords, and polearms to fish, sweets, and rabbits; anything–literally anything–a technomancer might be able to repurpose into a power core and infuse the runi with life; and, sometimes, a warhelm or jaunty headgear to give the runi a personal touch. Reflection Shield in Action
Battle 1: Ash Mirrage
Conditions | Description |

With the Explosive Weaponry all the monster will have the Blast and because of that, I use Conqueror Jacek that will not only give +2 speed but also the Scattershot that will spread out the damage and Piercing ability that will inflict any excess damage on the armor to the health the use Taunt with Coeurl Lurker to focus the enemy attack on a card then place Ash Mirrage next to it to contain the blast damage but my attempts were futile since the opponent choose the same but still I won this battle at the end.
Battle 2: Water Caller
Conditions | Description |

![]() Gold League Wild Format | 54 Mana Cap Available Elements: Fire, Water, Earth |
![]() Healed Out | All healing abilities are removed from Monsters and Summoners. |
Total Rounds | 5 |
Link | https://splinterlands.com?p=battle&id=sl_4856248fdf8536c45ca83f5821f765dc&ref=saydie |
For this battle, all monsters cannot use heal. I choose a heavy- magic team with lots of damage and a Taunt card with Kraken Followed by Water Caller in case there is a blast damage but instead my opponent place 2 monsters with Magic Reflect which Water Caller is still immune.
Battle 3: Tide Biter
Conditions | Description |
---|---|
![]() Diamond League Modern Format | 13 Mana Cap Available Elements: Fire, Water, Earth, Life, Death, Dragon |
![]() Explosive Weaponry | All Monsters have the Blast ability. |
![]() Holy Protection | All Monsters have the Divine Shield ability. |

Link | https://splinterlands.com?p=battle&id=sl_134db71575f60dd794af05ab88e2c167&ref=bltzr-wizard-726 |
Another Explosive Weaponry ruleset here where I use Chaos Agent which is a very good card at low- mana battles followed by Tide Biter to absorbed any blast damage on fontal attacks.
Battle 4: Corsair Bosun
Conditions | Description |
---|---|
![]() Gold League Diamond Format | 58 Mana Cap Available Elements: Life, Dragon |
![]() Lost Legendaries | Legendary Monsters may not be used in battles. |
Total Rounds | 4 |
Link | https://splinterlands.com?p=battle&id=sl_0a9a496416a550d83c8aeb7d1857dd89&ref=saydie |
On this battle, there was only Life and Dragon element available and legendary monsters cannot be used. With the summoner Quix the Devious, I choose a combination of Dragon and Life monsters with Djinn Chwala as my tank and Corsair Bosun on the 2nd position since it has the Reach ability. The opponent also chooses Djinn Chwala for their tank so the Reflection Shield of Corsair Bosun proves to be useful not to mention that it is dealing 5 damage per attack.
Battle 5: Runic Skyclaw
Conditions | Description |
---|---|
![]() Gold League Wild Format | 44 Mana Cap Available Elements: Life, Earth, Dragon |
![]() Explosive Weaponry | All Monsters have the Blast ability. |
![]() Keep Your Distance | Monsters with Melee attack may not be used in battles. |
Total Rounds | 4 |
Link | https://splinterlands.com?p=battle&id=sl_eeee3859330408a6d0c8bffacea1e0c3&ref=avainattempt |
Another Explosive Weaponry rule set was in played on this battle where melee monsters cannot be played. I use the same pattern of using Taunt with Mycelic Slipspawn and this time with Runic Skyclaw that while preventing the blast damage was also dealing more more damage to the opponent since it also has the Snipe ability.
Battle 6: Oshuur Constantia
Conditions | Description |
---|---|
![]() Gold League Wild Format | 50 Mana Cap Available Elements: Life, Dragon |
![]() Spreading Fury | All Monsters have the Enrage ability. |
![]() Counter Magic | All monsters has the Magic Reflect ability. |
Total Rounds | 5 |
Link | https://splinterlands.com?p=battle&id=sl_849344bb862083640172407de2a1c64a&ref=saydie |
On this battle, there is a Countermagic ruleset where magic attacks will be reflected to the attacker so the usual option is to either use range or melee monsters but here, I can use Oshuur Constantia to ignore the reflected damage and continue with the magic attack and Resurrect a monster after it was defeated.
Battle 7: Venator Kinjo
Conditions | Description |
---|---|
![]() Silver League Modern Format | 30 Mana Cap Available Elements: Fire, Earth, Life |
![]() Aim True | Melee and Ranged attacks always hit their target. |
![]() Close Range | Ranged attacks may be used in the first position in battles. |
Total Rounds | 5 |
Link | https://splinterlands.com?p=battle&id=sl_ea552799be5ab24d4dbdb9714cd484ef&ref=agonyaccepted |
The rule set available for this battle includes Close Range, giving range monsters the ability to attack at the 1st position so I choose the summoner Iltain which deals Return Fire damage to the opponent which becomes fatal to the opponent since it use a range team with Yodin Zaku. The blast damage then was absorbed by Venator Kinjo.
Battle 8: Runi
Conditions | Description |
---|---|
![]() Gold League Wild Format | 36 Mana Cap Available Elements: Fire, Water, Earth, Life, Death, Dragon |
![]() Earthquake | Non-flying Monsters take 2 Melee damage at the end of each round. |
![]() Explosive Weaponry | All Monsters have the Blast ability. |
Total Rounds | 5 |
Times backfire Triggers | 3 |
Link | https://splinterlands.com?p=battle&id=sl_ea552799be5ab24d4dbdb9714cd484ef&ref=agonyaccepted |
On this setup, I placed Runi at the 2nd position in order to absorbed the blast damage since we have Explosive Weaponry rule set since it has bigger health and armor than Tide Biter and has the Rebirth ability that will bring it back to life with the same armor although the health is only one.
Final Thoughts
For the longest times, we have difficulty when facing opponents that can use Blast, Magic Reflect, Return Fire and Thorns specially now that they are not just abilities anymore but also rule sets. But with the new ability that is Reflection Shield, we now have more fighting chance against this abilities. The ideal setup to use for this cards is by having Taunt monsters followed by this card.
