Riftwatchers-Neutral.png

Amidst the Chaos that has brought only darkness and despair.
A small flicker of light may carry all the world's hope.
The Riftwatchers are coming
And the Splinterlands will never be the same. - Riftwatcher's Trailer

Introduction

Hi! @Saydie here, playing Splinterlands everyday.

Ritwatchers is a mini set for the Chaos Legion much like how Dice is for the Untamed and for quite a while now, Riftwatchers have been available for ranked battles and has brought big changes on the game. Not only that most of the monsters are mana- hungry as lots of them cost high mana, some even exceeding 10, they also introduced a new ability called Fury which doubles the damage for monsters that have the Taunt ability. This will be my final review for this card series that will cover the Neutral element. They were just like Dragon cards that can be used with other elements.

Lore

As the Riftwatchers travel between realms laid to ruin by the Chaos Legion, there are many scraps left behind. That is where the junkers step in. They go through what’s left and take anything their allies can repurpose. These collectors often specialize in crafting, mechanics, and repair for the Riftwatchers. Continue Reading...

Use Case

Junker is a melee monster of the Neutral element. It has the Reach ability at level 1 which allows it to be able to attack even at the 2nd position. At level 6, it will gain the Repair ability which restores a portion of the armor of the monster that received most damage in armor. The use case for this card will be when there is an Up Close & Personal rule set where only melee monsters can be used. It's Repair will be vital when there is an Armored Up where monsters get +2 armor and Weak Magic where magic attacks need to deplete armor before damaging the opponent's health or they simply use summoners such as Kelya Frendul and Granmaster Rathe that gives all ally monsters + armor. It will also be vital on restoring the armor of monsters like Legionaire Alvar and Grum Flameblade which have the Void Armor to protect it against magic opponents. With a cost of 7 mana to use, this will be a monster that can be used during an Odd Ones Out rule set.

Lore

The charge of rune crafters is to invent more and more ingenious ways to use runes to empower weapons and other devices. However, because there is no mana to spare on the ruined realms left in the wake of the Chaos Legion, not only do these inventions need to be ground-breaking, but the rune crafters must also design them with optimal efficiency in mind. Conservation is a must.

If they are to face off against the great might of the Chaos Legion, the Riftwatchers need every advantage they can get, and rune crafters are masters of innovation. Continue Reading...

Use Case

Rune Crafter is a range monster of the Neutral element. It has the Fury at level 1 which is a good counter against monster with Taunt ability as it deals 2x the damage to them. When it reached level 6, it gains the Snare ability which removes the Flying ability of the target that can be used during an Earthquake rule set where monsters without this ability will received -2 damage every turn but at least use the summoner Brighton Bloom so that this card will not received any damage. For an 8 mana- cost card, this will be available during an Evens Stevens rule set.

Lore

Scavo Technomancers can harness elemental magic. However, unlike traditional magic-users, they do not cast spells. Instead, they create apparatuses and devices and infuse their creations with mana, resulting in a fascinating blend of techno-magic.

They can fashion advanced weapons; devices that generate auras to improve their allies’ offensive and defensive capabilities; mechanical suits that provide protection, enhanced reactions, and other protective measures; and gadgets that can do everything in between... all powered by gears, cogs, steam, and magic.

While they don’t wield massive two-handed axes or cast cataclysmic spells, the technomancy of a Scavo Technomancer can change the tide of a battle like nothing else. Continue Reading...

Card Stats

Scavo Technomancer_stats.png

Use Case

Scavo technomancer is a magic monster of the Neutral element with Blast ability at level 1 which deals additional damage on monsters that are adjacent to the target monster. When it reaches level 4, it will gain the Rust which reduce the armor of enemy monsters as long as this card remains on the field which will be useful when fighting against summoners with armor such as Kelya Frendul and Drake of Arnak and when there is a Queen Mycelia or Venari Wavesmith, monsters with the Protect ability that gives +2 armor on all ally monsters. The final ability that this card gains is the Blind which gives 15% chance that the opponent will miss it's target. It was very slow so using it when there is a Reverse Speed might be the best use for this card. With 5 mana, this card will be available during an Odd Ones Out rule set.

Lore

When the Riftwatchers spotted the coeurl lurker on Lemell, they figured it could be another weapon in their arsenal against the Chaos Legion. However, no matter what traps they laid for it, the beast was impossible to snare. When they finally cornered it, the coeurl attacked and decimated an entire squad of hunters. The sole survivor described it as a sleek, cat-like creature with terrible fangs and claws. It had four tentacles tipped with thorns, two each on its shoulders and hindquarters, and the tail of a scorpion. It used its tentacles and tail to impale its prey, then tossed them aside, slammed them against a tree or the ground, or yanked them in close for the killing blow.

The Riftwatchers became even more desperate to capture the coeurl and turn it to their own ends. They called upon the greatest hunter on Lemell, the wild elf, Ilyana Daelen. After nine long weeks, she trapped two of them, a male and a female. The Riftwatchers trained them. In time, the pair would respond to basic commands from their third handler.

They were right; the coeurl proved fearsome weapons that wreaked havoc on the enemy, and they quickly became a legionnaire’s worst nightmare. However, they remained wild beasts, and without the runic implants to serve as a safeguard, they were just as apt to turn on the Riftwatchers as attack the Chaos Legions.

Just ask what’s left of their first two handlers. Continue Reading...

Coeurl Lurker_stats.png

Use Case

Coeurl Lurker is a melee monster of the neutral element which at level 1 have the Taunt ability which attracts all abled monsters to only attack this card that is usually done to prevent the opponent to target ally monsters such as monsters with abilities like Sneak and Snipe or to contain the damage when fighting under the Explosive Weaponry rule set where every monsters have the Blast and Dodge which gives this card an additional 25% chance to evade melee and range attacks. When it reaches level 2, it will gain the Phase ability which allows it to also evade magic attack. The final ability that this card will earn is the Thorns which deals -2 damage to any melee monster that attacks this card that will be best used when there is an Up Close & Personal rule set where only melee monsters are allowed to use. With 11 mana, this card is available when there is an Odd Ones Out rule set.

Final Thoughts

With Riftwatchers now added to the ranked battles, it added more varieties and combinations on the strategies that we can use specially on High- Mana battles and one thing I notice is that even at their base level, most of this monster are competitive enough for higher leagues.

The Neutral team provides the same versatility as the Dragon team that they can be both used together with other elements as long as the rule set permits it.

The cards that I most like to use on this set is the Coeurl Lurker with the excellent speed, the capability to attract all attacks towards it, and is capable of evading melee, range and magic opponents. I also see the importance of Junker as a monster that restores an ally armor and Scavo Technomancer that removes it because the presence and absence of ones armor may result to an emidiate defeat.
