Ruleset strategy / analysis: Counterpell

Special ruleset strategy twitter.png

Introduction

In this week episode of the battle mage secret we deep dive in the rule set: counterspell.
Nice rule set, also pretty easy to counter or evade, just do not play magic monsters.
Sometimes its harder to counter when also wands out rule set is into play. Then you can only select magic monster 🤣.

Ruleset

All monster will get the magic reflect ability at the start of the battle.
Monster that will attack with magic will receive damage back.
Damage returned is equal to the damage of the attacker divided by 2, rounded up.

Official ruleset information from splinterlands: List-of-In-Game-Rulesets

Abilities Synergies

Reflection Shield - No damage taken from reflected magic attacks.

Amplify - ability increases the returned magic damage by 1.

Thorns, Return fire - The chance is higher that there will be melee or ranged attack monster, so it is nice to pick up an extra monster with thorns or return fire.

Backfire - again the chance is higher that melee or ranged is used so the chance to miss is higher, because magic is excluded normally excluded for miss calculation.

Strategies / Select

Most of the time the strategy is avoid to magic. Play some extra counter option like thorns or return fire.

All other than magic attack and you are save.

Preferred teams

Really depended on other factors like:

  • Other rulesets
  • Mana cap
  • What you opponent is often playing
  • What cards and level do you own/rent

Here are some setups that I like to play. Viewed with the levels and stats that I own.

Summoner#1#2#3#4#5#6

-1 range for your opponent and basic melee and range mix for yourself.
Like the Prismologist for the blast it brings.

Summoner#1#2#3#4#5#6

Love this strong melee team sometime is switch the swamp spitter for the Angelic Mandarin for the triage.

Summoner#1#2#3#4#5#6

Some range defuff thorns and return fire.

Avoid

Basically all magic monster except:

This because of reflection shield or void, no return damage or reduced return damage.

I'm less likely to pick monster with void and void armor abilities because the chance is lower that there will be magic monster.

Avoid monsters with blast and magic, the adjacent monsters that are hit with blast will also magic reflect. Do not use monsters like:

Strategy

High mana low change on magic monster so in this case I will chose the life splinter

Rulesets

Counterspell:
Rule set of this week. All monster will receive magic reflect. So be aware/avoid for magic attack.

Reverse Speed:
Normally high speed monster go fist no first slow monsters. Also miss change based on speed difference is not reversed. So a 5 speed monster attacks a 1 speed monster had a 40% miss chance , applies for ranged and melee monsters.

Holy Protection:
Frist attack damage is absorbed.

The Lineup

Summoner

CardReason
Yes yes, not Lux this time. Just upgraded my general sloan to max level. Now 3 summoners equipped for diamond (Lux/Quix/Sloan) next stop is obsidian. For this situation i will buff my own ranged attackers.

Monsters Lineup

#1#2#3#4#5#6

Uriel the Purifier (lvl 3)
High health monster with heal. Down side is that is only attack 1 per two rounds, because of the re-charge. Very solid tank.

Runi (lvl 4)
My runi on the second position in case my opponent brings a blast monster. Need to enjoy my runi on the battlefield when land 1.5 it will be working on land 😥.

Venari Crystalsmith (lvl 8)
Another healer to keep the tank as long as possible alive.

Adelade Brightwing (lvl 3)
This one is a bit risky, magic attack so it will get magic reflect damage.
Assume it will be alive long enough to repair some my shield.

Pelacor Arbalest (lvl 6)
Double strike, love this monster of the life team and it is often in my setup

Prismologist (lvl 4)
Made my team this time because of the blast, to do some additional damage.

Rounds

Start :

image.png
Many magic monsters by mine opponent, bot or ....
It has ignored the counterspell rule set.
My opponent has many healing monsters and resurrect, might it be enough imo my opponent will take to much damage of the magic refelct?

Love his level 4 Uriel the Purifier with the extra redemption, nice when holy protection is one of the rule sets.

Round 1:

image.png
First round many divine shield. I have a bit better spread and the magic reflect also helps with with taking down some extra divine shields.

Round 2:

image.png
The redemption of my opponent his Uriel the Purifier is also a nice way to take out all divine shields.
Lucky the resurrect is done on the Spirit Hoarder the magic reflect is really helping, in this case taking me to the win.

Round 3:

image.png
His magic attackers are killing themself. My team is still standing strong.

Round 4:

image.png
Final round, complete team is standing. Was expecting that Adelade Brightwing would have been killed by the magic reflect without using her resurrect.

Conclusion

Sorry for my opponent he demonstrates what not todo with the magic reflect rule set. Just to many magic monsters.
My opinion about this rule set: this rule set is not troublesome when it active, easy to setup an counter team. Which can be complemented with extra buff or debuffs as described in the "Abilities Synergies" section.
