Aparentemente no quedan muchos rastros en Gibraltar que digan que fue un barrio de la ciudad de San Roque. Pero sólo en apariencia. Las calles del centro histórico son las mismas de la vieja ciudad española de hace poco más de trescientos años pero con los nombres cambiados. La calle principal del peñón es actualmente "Main Street" pero incluso muchos de sus ciudadanos la llaman como antiguamente "Calle Real".
Apparently there are not many traces left in Gibraltar to say that it was a quarter of the town of San Roque. But only in appearance. The streets of the historic centre are the same as those of the old Spanish town of just over three hundred years ago but with changed names. The main street of the rock is nowadays "Main Street" but even many of its citizens call it as "Calle Real".

In this post I am going to show you a trace of the history of this great Rock that fortunately has been kept in perfect condition. The fountain of the four gargoyles.
Originariamente estaba en la Plaza Mayor que actualmente se llama Commercial Square. El agua era captada de la que filtraba la roca y llevada hasta la fuente mediante tuberías y canales. Salían por las bocas de las cuatro gárgolas. Por los años de uso han tenido que ser cambiadas por las réplicas que se ven en las fotografías. En las cercana Villa de los Barrios hay una fuente de la misma época con gárgolas muy parecidas. Lo mismo que en el pueblo de Gaucín tiene su fuente de los seis caños del año 1628.
Originally it was in the Plaza Mayor which is now called Commercial Square. The water was collected from the water filtering through the rock and carried to the fountain through pipes and channels. They came out of the mouths of the four gargoyles. Due to years of use they have had to be replaced by the replicas shown in the photographs. In the nearby village of Villa de los Barrios there is a fountain from the same period with very similar gargoyles. The village of Gaucín has its fountain of the six spouts dating from 1628.
Para poder descifrar que la fuente fue construida y usada cuando Gibraltar era española hay que fijarse en la fecha tallada en la roca: Año de 1684. Primero por la castellana letra "Ñ", y después que hasta 1704 no fue invadida por las fuerzas británicas y holandesas.
In order to decipher that the fountain was built and used when Gibraltar was Spanish, one has to look at the date carved in the rock: 1684. First by the Castilian letter "Ñ", and then by the fact that it was not invaded by British and Dutch forces until 1704.
Justo al lado de la fuente hay un cartel de información sobre la fuente pero no explica nada del origen español.
Right next to the fountain there is a sign with information about the fountain, but it does not explain anything about the Spanish origin.
El agua del acueducto bajo las arenas rojas se vendía en esta fuente, que se encuentra cerca de aquí, desde 1684 hasta 1872. Reconstruida en la calle del castillo en 1886, estuvo en uso hasta 1964.
Water from the acueduct under the red sands was sold at this fountain, standing near here , from 1684 to 1872. Rebuilt in castle road in 1886 it remained in use until 1964.
Arenas rojas o "Red Sands" estaba a las afueras de la ciudad española, al Sur de la Puerta de África lo que ahora sería el parque botánico "The Alameda Gibraltar Botanic Gardens". Eran arenales usados como huertos.
"Red Sands" was on the outskirts of the Spanish city, south of the Puerta de Africa, what would now be the botanical park "The Alameda Gibraltar Botanic Gardens". They were sandy areas used as orchards.
Actualmente está junto al monumento Británico de la Gran Guerra en Line Wall Road. justo en frente del ayuntamiento.
It is now next to the British Great War Memorial on Line Wall Road, opposite the Town Hall.
