Han conservado muy bien esta chimenea de las primeras industrias que fabricó materiales en la misma colonia británica. Construida con la roca caliza sacada de los túneles excavados en el peñón como casi todo lo que hay hecho en Gibraltar.
They have preserved very well this chimney of the first industries that manufactured materials in the same British colony. Built with limestone rock taken from the tunnels dug in the rock like almost everything else made in Gibraltar.
Situada en el puerto posiblemente fuera de alguna fabrica de mecanizados para hacer piezas de metal para reparar los barcos de guerra.
Situated in the harbour, it may have been the site of a machining factory to make metal parts for repairing warships.
Las naves junto a la chimenea son de la misma época y parecen abandonadas. Esperando un nuevo uso o su demolición por ser tan necesario el escaso terreno.
The ships next to the chimney are of the same period and look derelict. Awaiting a new use or demolition as the scarce land is so badly needed.
La fabricación de piezas como los remaches de las chapas de los barcos era de lo más esencial en una época donde las continuas batallas para mantener el control del comercio mundial, dependían de que la Royal Navy no tuviera que esperar piezas traídas desde Inglaterra.
The manufacture of parts such as rivets for the ships' plates was essential at a time when the continuous battles to maintain control of world trade depended on the Royal Navy not having to wait for parts to be brought from England.
Por ello este puerto fue tan importante. No solamente por la defensa que daba a sus barcos, si no también por el mantenimiento prestado a ellos.
That is why this port was so important. Not only for the defence it provided for its ships, but also for the maintenance provided to them.
