When we look back, we realize that the days and years go by so quickly. Not long ago, I was holding my son in my arms, with him on my lap, watching cartoons together, and today I look at him and he’s about to earn his first degree in a college major. You look back and say, “How quickly time flies,” but when you remember every moment when the children are little, sometimes you think it shouldn’t go by so fast—you want to keep holding that little one in your arms, but the fact is, children grow up and have to forge their own paths.
As a mother, I’m proud of this moment. Today we went to a Mass of Thanksgiving to thank God for this new stage in his life. The Mass was organized by the technical college, and there were several people we knew graduating, and that’s when I realize how small Maracay is—it’s like a small town. Honestly, the Mass was beautiful. I’d never been inside this church before, and it seems quite large to me. Although there were some guests standing—there weren’t any chairs—some people had to stand even though there were seats downstairs and in the upper section.
The students were identified by their colored shirts—black, blue, green, dark blue, and burgundy—and each represented a different major: tourism, human resources, international trade, business administration, and various other fields. This is the 65th graduating class. Seeing so many young people with such excited expressions—knowing they’ll soon have their diplomas in hand—brought back memories of when I was in their shoes.
I enjoyed sharing this moment with my son—accompanying him to church with his classmates—and seeing the joy on his face. The priest spoke very eloquently and offered some good advice to the young people: a student’s life is different from that of a working professional, but what matters is that everyone can achieve their goals and be successful in whatever they set out to do.
