What does it mean to be a man already, by itself, today is a complicated question? What does it mean to be a man who grows up in a violent environment? It adds another layer of complexity, but how to be a man who grows up in a violent environment, being gay already by itself? It is the perfect setup for an interesting plot.
Moonlight chooses to explore this conflict between times divided carefully in our chapters that give name to the movie.
First of all, we have this section called "Little," one where the childhood of our protagonist, Chiron, is narrated, a protagonist who already by itself starts from very difficult conditions, raised by a mother sunk in drugs, without a paternal figure in which to seek refuge or guidance.
So to Chiron it falls to build his own masculinity, perhaps from a more fragile vision due to his own environment, added, of course, to his own identity, one that he still doesn't understand completely and the one that causes him to be harassed frequently by other children of his age.
Thus, the encounter with who we could call his mentor in many aspects of life takes place. This being a Cuban immigrant who lives in Miami and who, upon seeing our protagonist being pursued by other children, decides to provide protection and take him in perhaps as the son he does not have.
Upon seeing the mistreatment that also adds to the burdens that Chiron carries and that he receives from his own mother, and perhaps more than mistreatment, is this inattention, a fairly particular type of abandonment.
Thus we see how the relationship between them two grows, one of fraternity and perhaps a father-son bond, where Chiron sees the father he has never had, but who he has always needed. From this aspect, we could see this figure as a great guide for his life, a guide that will mark both the good and the bad decisions of his life.
Because from this figure that we could see as very positive in the life of this boy, the other side of the coin is also shown to us, one where his principal activity is selling drugs and controlling the other vendors of his neighborhood who render him this type of tribute.
On the one hand, being someone with enough sensitivity to protect a child in a situation of vulnerability, but on the other, being the same one who manages the drug business, which in turn indirectly affects so many families and that we see perfectly reflected when in a scene the mom of this child confronts him for being himself who sells the drug that is destroying her little by little and that doesn't allow him entirely to provide the attention that his son needs.
Thus, upon Chiron finding out about this and giving himself this first shock between his reality, who he sees as a figure to follow, and the very thing that provokes this great pain in his life, the first cut of the movie occurs.
And we follow to the second stage named likewise, "Chiron," one where his adolescence is explored, an adolescence where for some reason that is never told to us and this mentor is not in his life, although we know that the bond is still there, upon finding Teresa, who we knew was the partner of this one, still being part of the life of this boy and now she taking this maternal figure, we could say, although his mother is still there, but now each time more deteriorated by the use of drugs, we could say almost that at a point of no return.
Here we see how the conflicts of his life have escalated to a point that bullying tends to be already a constant, even in safe environments like his school should be, where he is pursued by his orientation, one that up to this cut of the movie had surfaced, but had not exploded entirely, a thing that does happen here.
When, after finding himself cornered by his classmates and attempting awkwardly to defend himself, Chiron ends up destroyed in a life that他不 wants, apart from this also carrying with all the problems of his mother that each time drive her to a more unhappy life.
Among all this, this protagonist manages to find a small light. To run away to the beach at night and under this same moonlight, where in the first cut of the movie his mentor was seen narrating to him about his past life, he finds one of his companions, one with whom he had already fantasized unconsciously and who also seems to feel attracted by him.
That night brings an intimate moment. They return home making the pact of keeping the secret, but in this movie everything seems to have a boomerang effect, because the next day this same companion is pressured by the bullies of the protagonist so that he beats him up.
Being evident the disagreement of the boy for doing this, but yielding before social pressure, and after beating him repeatedly and asking him not to keep stopping, Chiron receives a beating from his classmates, guided principally by the bullying that since little seems to pursue him, making uncomfortable perhaps his identity or the fragility that he believes to see in the same.
Thus, after a catharsis and seeing his face completely destroyed by this circumstance, we could say it this way, Chiron decides to take justice by his own hands and in a violent burst attacks his companion leaving him unconscious.
Thus, after a cut, we jump to the third part of the movie called "Black." Here we see Chiron completely adult, having a personality contrary to what we could imagine, being a trafficker in Atlanta.
After this violent incident, being interned in a reformatory and upon leaving achieving this position and going escalating little by little in the streets, we see an evident physical change, appearing a figure much more imposing, reflected also in the car that he drives, the grills that he uses, everything attempts to transmit this strength, to distance himself from the weakness that marked his years of youth.
But in the middle of all this, he receives a call from this same companion that in his youth showed him what love and pain were with the same hand. Thus, after an apology and a brief talk, Black drives from Atlanta to Miami to reencontrarse with him and, after a small scene prepared by the hands of this same companion, they manage to reconnect with these sentiments of the past and this completely different man we see that in his interior still hides that boy, still Chiron is there under the skin, the tattoos, the muscles of Black.
Thus, after a long talk of their lives and a reconciliation both with the sentiments of the past as in the way in which these were reflected in the day of today, we see how these two become to unite perhaps to live the love that they couldn't in their moment, closing the movie with a cut of Chiron like a child under that same moonlight that marked all the important events of his life during all the movie and, after looking to the camera, we have a final cut.
A very daring movie, perhaps the best of its year, one of the best of what goes of century, a movie that dares to put the finger in the most complex themes of actuality and give us other perspectives, not stay in the superficial or simply in the cliché and dare to give us more.
For this, Moonlight I think that already is an indisputable classic of modern cinema, dares not only to tell, but to show what it meant at least at the beginnings of the 21st century to be a black man, gay, who grows up in a violent environment, and with this perhaps reflect a part of humanity that up to that point was a secret whispered.

¿Qué significa ser un hombre ya de por sí hoy en día es una pregunta complicada? ¿Qué significa ser un hombre que crece en un ambiente violento? Le agrega una capa más de complejidad, pero ¿cómo ser un hombre que crece en un ambiente violento siendo gay ya de por sí? Es el planteamiento perfecto para una trama interesante.
Moonlight elige explorar este conflicto entre tiempos divididos cuidadosamente en nuestros capítulos que dan nombre a la película.
En primer lugar, tenemos este apartado llamado "Pequeño", uno donde se narra la infancia de nuestro protagonista, Chiron, un protagonista que ya de por sí parte de unas condiciones muy difíciles, criado por una madre sumida en las drogas, sin una figura paterna en la cual buscar refugio ni orientación.
Por lo que a Chiron le toca construir su propia masculinidad, tal vez desde una visión más frágil debido a su propio entorno, sumado, claro está, a su propia identidad, una que todavía no entiende del todo y la que provoca que este sea acosado con frecuencia por otros niños de su edad.
Así se da el encuentro con quien podríamos llamar su mentor en muchos aspectos de la vida. Este siendo un inmigrante cubano que vive en Miami y que al ver a nuestro protagonista ser perseguido por otros niños decide brindarle protección y acogerlo quizás como el hijo que no tiene.
Al ver el maltrato que también se suma a las cargas que lleva Chiron y que recibe por parte de su propia madre, y tal vez más que maltrato, es esta desatención, un tipo de abandono bastante particular.
Así vemos cómo crece la relación entre ellos dos, una de fraternidad y tal vez un vínculo padre-hijo, donde Chiron ve el padre que nunca ha tenido, pero que siempre ha necesitado. Desde este aspecto podríamos ver a esta figura como una gran guía para su vida, una guía que marcará tanto las buenas como las malas decisiones de su vida.
Porque desde esta figura que podríamos ver como muy positiva en la vida de este niño, también se nos muestra la otra cara de la moneda, una donde su principal actividad es vender drogas y controlar a los otros vendedores de su barrio que le rinden este tipo de tributo.
Por un lado, siendo alguien con suficiente sensibilidad para proteger a un niño en una situación de vulnerabilidad, pero por otra, siendo el mismo el que maneja el negocio de las drogas, que a su vez indirectamente afecta a tantas familias y que vemos de forma perfectamente reflejada cuando en una escena la mamá de este niño lo confronta al ser él mismo quien le vende la droga que la va destruyendo poco a poco y que no le permite del todo brindarle la atención que su hijo necesita.
Así, al Chiron enterarse de esto y darse este primer choque entre su realidad, quien él ve como una figura a seguir, y lo mismo que provoca este gran dolor en su vida, se da el primer corte de la película.
Y seguimos a la segunda etapa nombrada asimismo, "Chiron", una donde se explora su adolescencia, una adolescencia donde por alguna razón que nunca se nos cuenta y este mentor no está en su vida, aunque sabemos que el vínculo sigue ahí, al encontrarse Teresa, quien sabíamos que era la pareja de este, siendo todavía parte de la vida de este muchacho y ahora ella tomando esta figura materna, podríamos decir, aunque su madre sigue ahí, pero ya cada vez más deteriorada por el uso de las drogas, podríamos decir casi que en un punto de no retorno.
Aquí vemos cómo los conflictos de su vida han escalado a un punto que el bullying suele ser ya una constante, incluso en entornos seguros como debería ser su escuela, donde es perseguido por su orientación, una que hasta este corte de la película se había asomado, pero no había estallado del todo, cosa que sí pasa aquí.
Cuando, tras verse acorralado por sus compañeros e intentar torpemente defenderse, Chiron termina destrozado en una vida que no quiere. A parte de esto, también cargando con todos los problemas de su madre que cada vez la orillan a una vida más infeliz.
Entre todo esto, este protagonista logra dar con una pequeña luz. Huir a la playa en la noche y, bajo esta misma luz de luna, donde en el primer corte de la película se veía a su mentor narrarle sobre su vida pasada, encuentra a uno de sus compañeros, uno con el que ya había fantaseado inconscientemente y que parece también sentirse atraído por él.
Esa noche trae un momento íntimo. Vuelven a casa haciendo el pacto de mantener el secreto, pero en esta película todo parece tener un efecto bumerán, porque al día siguiente este mismo compañero es presionado por los bullies del protagonista para que lo golpee.
Siendo evidente el desacuerdo del muchacho por hacer esto, pero cediendo ante la presión social, y luego de golpearlo repetidas veces y pedirle que no se siga parando, Chiron recibe una paliza de sus compañeros, guiados principalmente por el bullying que desde pequeño lo parece perseguir, incomodándole quizás su identidad o la fragilidad que cree ver en el mismo.
Así, tras una catarsis y ver su cara completamente destrozada por esta circunstancia, podríamos decirlo de esta manera, Chiron decide tomar justicia por sus propias manos y en un arranque violento ataca a su compañero dejándolo inconsciente.
Así, tras un corte, saltamos a la tercera parte de la película llamada "Black". Aquí vemos a Chiron completamente adulto, teniendo una personalidad contraria a lo que podríamos imaginar, siendo un traficante en Atlanta.
Luego de este incidente violento, ser internado en un reformatorio y al salir conseguir esta posición y ir escalando poco a poco en las calles, vemos un cambio físico evidente, pareciendo una figura mucho más imponente, reflejado también en el auto que conduce, en los grills que usa, todo intenta transmitir esta fuerza, alejarse de la debilidad que marcó sus años de juventud.
Pero en medio de todo esto, recibe una llamada de este mismo compañero que en su juventud le mostró lo que era el amor y el dolor con la misma mano. Así, tras una disculpa y una breve charla, Black conduce desde Atlanta hasta Miami para reencontrarse con él y, tras una pequeña cena preparado por las manos de este mismo compañero, logran reconectar con estos sentimientos del pasado y este hombre completamente diferente vemos que en su interior todavía oculta a ese muchacho, todavía Chiron está ahí bajo la piel, los tatuajes, los músculos de Black.
Así, tras una larga charla de sus vidas y una reconciliación tanto con los sentimientos del pasado como en la forma en que estos se reflejaron en el día de hoy, vemos cómo estos dos se vuelven a unir tal vez para vivir el amor que no pudieron en su momento, cerrando la película con un corte de Chiron de niño bajo esa misma luz de luna que marcó todos los eventos importantes de su vida durante toda la película y, tras mirar a la cámara, tenemos un corte final.
Una película muy atrevida, tal vez la mejor de su año, una de las mejores de lo que va de siglo, una película que se atreve a meter el dedo en los temas más complejos de la actualidad y darnos otras perspectivas, no quedarse en lo superficial o simplemente en lo cliché y atreverse a dar más.
Por esto, Moonlight creo que ya es un clásico indiscutible del cine moderno, se atreve no solo a contar, sino a mostrar qué significó por lo menos a inicios del siglo XXI ser un hombre negro, gay, que crece en un ambiente violento, y con esto tal vez reflejar una parte de la humanidad que hasta ese punto era un secreto a voces.
