This is my second entry to the #diysuncontest initiative and I am excited to share another of my "occurrences" with you 馃槀.
The sun, this giant star that nourishes and warms us, is the protagonist of this great festival of creation in June. Precisely the radiation emitted by this star led me to think of something to protect us from it and here I let my imagination run wild.
In Cuba the temperatures are over 30掳 these days and the sun feels hot on the skin. Personally, I don't remember previous years on this same date when it was so hot and the sun was so strong.
What better antidote to alleviate the effect of the heat than a refreshing drink? Coming home after a long hot day at work and having a cool drink in the company of family or friends would be great - why not make it fun and elegant too?
I went back to the 1800's when women's fashion included corsets, sackcloth, sackcloth, long stockings and I don't know how many other garments that just thinking about it makes me hot as hell. 馃槀
I visualised those ladies with all their attire and accessories such as fans and lace parasols that subtly let the sun's rays pass through and it occurred to me to make an umbrella similar to these to decorate my refreshing drink.

El sol, esta estrella gigante que nos alimenta y nos da calor es el protagonista de esta gran fiesta de creaci贸n del mes de junio. Precisamente las radiaciones que emite este Astro me llev贸 a pensar en algo que permitiera protegernos de ello y aqu铆 dej茅 volar mi imaginaci贸n.
En Cuba las temperaturas est谩n sobrepasando los 30掳 por estos d铆as y el sol se siente picante en la piel. Personalmente, no recuerdo otros a帽os anteriores en este misma fecha que hiciera tanto calor y el sol estuviera tan fuerte.
驴Qu茅 mejor ant铆doto para aliviar el efecto del calor que una bebida refrescante? Llegar a casa despu茅s de una calurosa y larga jornada de trabajo y tomar una fr铆a bebida en compa帽铆a de la familia o de amigos ser铆a algo estupendo. 驴Por qu茅 no hacerlo divertido y elegante tambi茅n?
Me remont茅 a los a帽os 1800 cuando la moda de las mujeres inclu铆a corset, sayuelas, refajos, medias largas y no s茅 cu谩ntas prendas m谩s que de solo pensarlo me da un calor tremendo. 馃槀
Visualic茅 aquellas damas con todos sus atuendos y accesorios como los abanicos y las sombrillas de tela de encaje que dejaban pasar sutilmente los rayos del sol y se me ocurri贸 hacer una sombrilla similar a estas que adornara mi bebida refrescante.
驴Qu茅 tal si me acompa帽as en esta nueva aventura? Te cuento c贸mo lo hice y todos los recursos que emple茅 para llevarlo a cabo.

Me gusta darle nuevas oportunidades a los objetos, pues es una manera de proteger la naturaleza contra las contaminaciones por desechos. Me apasiona el reciclaje y en cada una de mis manualidades hago uso de productos reciclados.
- 10 m of recycled telephone cable (yellow and brown).
- A disposable plastic bag.
- Double-sided adhesive tape.
- Manual hair dryer.
- Number 8 needle for crocheting.
- 10 m de cable reciclado de tel茅fono (amarillo y marr贸n)
- Una bolsa de pl谩stico desechable.
- Cinta adhesiva de dos caras.
- Secadora de pelo manual.
- Aguja n煤mero 8 para tejer a crochet.
The first task was to separate the two wires that are intertwined with each other. To do this, I fixed one end and unwound this union until I had made a skein of each colour.
With the brown cable I made a circle of approximately 5 centimetres in diameter with three turns to achieve solidity in what would be the centre of the parasol.
From here I started to knit with the needle creating chain stitches around this circle (as many as the width of the circumference allowed me).
La primera tarea fue separar los dos cables que vienen entrelazados entre s铆. Para ello fij茅 un extremo y fui desenrollando esta uni贸n hasta que hice una madeja de cada color.
Con el cable marr贸n hice un c铆rculo de di谩metro aproximado de 5 cent铆metros con tres vueltas para lograr solidez en lo que ser铆a el centro de la sombrilla.
A partir de aqu铆 comenc茅 a tejer con la aguja creando puntos de cadeneta alrededor de este c铆rculo (tantos como me permiti贸 la amplitud de la circunferencia).
I knit two full rows of chain stitch and then in each row I began to increase one stitch until I reached five.
Tej铆 dos vueltas enteras de cadeneta y luego en cada vuelta comenc茅 a incrementar un punto hasta llegar a cinco.
With these rows completed, I made six chain stitches which I introduced in the third chain by making a double crochet to make a grid and close the umbrella. The last row was made with the yellow cable to combine and thus close the umbrella's canopy.
Con estas vueltas terminadas, realic茅 seis cadenetas que introduje en la tercera cadeneta haciendo un punto alto para lograr hacer un grill y dar cierre a la sombrilla. La 煤ltima vuelta lo hice con el cable de color amarillo para combinar y as铆 cerr茅 la copa de la sombrilla.
With eight pieces of 20 centimetres of yellow wire each I wove in crosses over the centre of the umbrella and tightened the wires on the inside by twisting them together. I placed a small piece of ribbon over the crosspiece and pressed it into a flat spiral to simulate the sun with its rays.
Con ocho pedazos de 20 cent铆metros de cable amarillo cada uno tej铆 en crucetas sobre el centro de la sombrilla y ajust茅 los cables por el interior torci茅ndolos entre s铆. Coloqu茅 un peque帽o pedazo de cinta sobre la cruceta y haciendo presi贸n hice una espiral plana simulando el sol con sus rayos.
I finished twisting the wires completely and to finish off the terminals I wrapped them in a small piece of plastic bag and applied heat to it with the hair dryer until it melted and was firm. This way I made sure that I didn't do any damage with the metal pins on the ends. Then a bath with plenty of foam so I could use it in my drink.
Termin茅 de torcer completamente los cables y para rematar los terminales envolv铆a en un peque帽o pedazo de bolsa pl谩stica a lo que le apliqu茅 calor con la secadora de pelo hasta que se fundi贸 y qued贸 firme. As铆 me asegur茅 que no hiciera da帽o con los pinchitos met谩licos de sus extremos. Luego un ba帽o con abundante espuma para poder utilizar dentro de mi bebida.

I confess that I had never dared to try knitting before, so I hope you specialists will forgive me and I hope to improve my technique through continuous practice. I've found it a bit difficult, as I'm left-handed and the whole process of the tutorials I've seen I've had to repeat it in mirror mode. Also, working with wire is not the same as working with thread, which is softer. I think it was worth the effort, what do you think?

Confieso que nunca antes me hab铆a atrevido a incursionar en el tejido, as铆 que espero me perdonen los especialistas en el tema y espero ir mejorando la t茅cnica a trav茅s de la pr谩ctica continua. Me ha resultado un poco dif铆cil, pues soy zurda y todo el proceso de los tutoriales que he visto he tenido que repetirlo en modo espejo. 馃槀 Adem谩s, trabajar con alambre no es igual que el hilo que es m谩s suave. Creo que el esfuerzo ha valido la pena, 驴Qu茅 creen ustedes?
